I would just add the $300,000 to what I already have and upgrade.
Hey! I didn't know you could do that with the 300k. If that's the case, I'm selling and moving to Steamboat

Having just returned from visiting the Houston area and looking at homes there, I can tell you that I would never, ever live in Texas, at least not in Houston. There are Bibles and Jesus stuff everywhere, the freeway is the most ugly, gigantic strip mall I've ever seen, and everyone seems to identify with a sports team or a church. The houses are all ugly, too, for some reason. I have never seen so many freakish, eccentric homes on the inside. Having been born and raised in the SF bay area, this does not go well for me. I would love to buy a house for a reasonable price, but I'd rather work to make more money and live in a beautiful, temperate place like California than live over there. Flame away, Texans! Glad it works for you, but I'd rather make more money than live in Texas.

Id take the $300,000, pay off my house here in Nevada and pay all my bills and buy some new furniture.
I would never consider living in Texas. The humidity and the giant mosquitos alone are a big deterrent. Add to the mix religious fanatics, and i'm staying far away from there. lol

Texas with a MONSTER pool and a pergola with Wisteria for some shade from the sun in the summer. Serious A/C and fans everywhere. You can't even get a decent condo in a great area in Cali. for that money that I know of unless one is a small town person, maybe then there is a hope for Cali.--if it was only between those two states. I would otherwise consider Idaho first or second, if not AZ, NC and OR.

I am a native Californian and moved to San Antonio, TX. I am moving back to CA. It's a matter of preference. I don't want to go into all the reasons why I am moving back in this thread, as there are too many to list, but if you go into the California/Los Angeles? Moving forum there is a detailed explanation of why I moved to Texas and why i am moving back and what my thoughts are on the whole situation.

Ahh nice clean California with all the organic thingies... Like Organic fruit, organic vegitables with organic Ecoli! Nothing Like nature! And to think California wan't energy but also wants other states to produce it. As for honest politicians... California's politicians are the most honest.. Like a free ride for DOLE on Midway or some such island so they do not have to pay minimum wage like the rest of the country.. I love California Honsety... and telling everyone ELSE to conserve energy while the same politicians and celebrities waste more than any other state. Its good to be in California.. no one notices

Default Texas, for sure

I'm a native Californian who's just disillusioned; no fed-up, with the most "things Californian"; i.e. liberal, tax and spend political climate, and the whole "political correctness" that permeates the culture here. The wife and I do a fair amount of traveling and I'm often embarrased to admit I'm a Californian; albeit a NORTHERN Californian.

I've lived in TX and plan to return there upon retirement in a few years. We will take advantage of the "California Windfall" when we sell our home here and replace it for half the cost there.

I like Texas food, music, people, and the pride that Texans exude. My experience is that Texans (actually Southerners in general) have a genuiness about them that is rare in many parts of CA. I can't wait to join them-hopefully all of us transplanted Californians won't have spoiled the place by the time I get there.

300k would not buy us (specific ADA needs, schools, decent neighborhood) what we need here in San Diego.

We've been toying with the idea of moving to San Antonio for the lower cost of living but the idea of leaving our friends and the temperate weather (DH has MS so symptoms are greatly exacerbated by extreme heat & humidity) has stopped us from taking the plunge.
