Hey there,

We're two 21 year old musicians hailing from pennsylvania. We've been here all of our lives and we're hoping to get out! We are in the middle of planning a road trip for this summer to check out places all across the country for a new home.

We'd like to get some general ideas of places we could look into that would be friendly for our age group, as well as having job opportunities and affordable housing. Our only work experience would be in concrete and plaster labor, though we're willing to do anything to make ends meet.

Why California?
Anywhere in particular?

If the only jobs available were in remote places like the Mojave Desert, Blythe, or the Modoc Plateau, or in rough parts of South Central Los Angeles, would you still be interested?

again, another 20 something that think Ca is the answer:: I would suggest you either stay where you are or look at other places in the USA. Ca is suffering from a very high unempoyement level, the cost of living is still over the top, there are 1000s of musicians that are looking for that big break and most will end up returning home or almost starving. Why not look in the So west or southern states, or better yet, stay home for a few more years..

Oh so cynical! I hope you don't represent the majority of the population ;D

Like I said, we are driving cross country checking places out. Obviously we can't scour every town and city in America or we would do that. I simply was asking for places we could look into. The point in going now is so that we're not still living here in a few years.

Honestly the move has nothing to do with being musicians, as if we stayed where we are we could manage to survive with limited success we have in the local area. There's a lot of personal reasons we have but no sense getting into that.

Charles--There's no particular reason California, it's just one of the places we thought we'd express some interest in. We've never been out that way though, so we haven't the slightest where to look. But we're not looking to live in the barrens or the hood, as there are much greener pastures else where.

There might be reasons for what seems like cynicism.

Unemployment in Pennsylvania was 7% in January, in California it was 10.1%.

For work you say you can do construction but that has nearly died in California due to the real estate collapse. You also mention music which is something like acting in California, too many people chasing dreams.

California is a great place, I'm decended from settlers who came here over 150 years ago.

Enjoy the trip, there will be lots to see.

But remember that this is a terrible time to want to come here looking for a place with greener grass. Just bad timing.

It's not cheap here, but San Luis Obispo could be a good choice

Depends on what kind of scene you want. I actually think Portland Ore. or Seattle would be cool cities to live in and are relatively cheaper than california.
