Crescent City, Redding, Eureka
Hello all i'm currently living in iowa and am considering a move out west to california once i graduate with my criminal justice degree. The three towns that interest the most are Crescent City, Redding, and Eureka. I love the outdoors and bing outdoors. I'm wondering how the police departments are like in these 3 towns. I'm also curious how the people are like and friendly they are to outsiders.

Don't know about the PD in Crescent City but you can always become a prison guard....ummm....Correctional Peace Officer at Pelican Bay State Prison just outside of the city.

People are friendly and yes, there is some outdoor activities, more in Redding than Cresent City or Eureka. Eureka is very liberal and pretty much filled the naturalist, further south there is better outdoor activities like hiking etc. Eureka offer good fishing, not a lot of other nature type of life.

Best Option is Redding IMO
I'd try Redding. I live between there and Red Bluff. Actually grew up in the area. Its terrific for all the outdoor recreation possibilities. Redding is within a couple hours drive of:
1. Lakes such as Shasta, Whiskeytown, Trinity, Eagle, Almanor;
2. Beautiful scenery and hiking in Mountain chains including the Cascades, the Trinity Alps, the Sierra Nevada,
3. Terrific fishing in rivers like the Sacramento, Trinity, Pit, McCloud, Fall;
4. Deer and waterfowl hunting in and around National Forests like the Shasta-Trinity, Klamath, Lassen, Modoc
5. Skiing at Mt. Shasta, and Ashland just over the Oregon line. Sierra Ski resorts are about 3 hours southeast.
6. Burney Falls, Lassen Volcanic Park, Castle Crags.
I've just hit on a few of the more prominent recreational opportunities surrounding Redding. The other thing you should consider is its more central location. Its about 2.5 hours north of Sacramento, about 3.5 hours northeast of the Bay Area or Napa Valley. About 3 hours east of the coast on Highway 299.
I think you'll find Eureka is really quite isolated and Crescent City is even more remote. Some may consider that a plus. The coast will be a more moderate climate-vastly cooler summer climate-Redding has brutally hot summers-up to 118 degrees, and slightly warmer, but with much wetter winters.
Redding has also been on the growing over the last decades, while Eureka has either stagnated or declined due to losses to lumber and fishing industries and the relative isolation I mentioned earlier.
Now, both Eureka and Crescent City have the Redwoods and the eternal fog that spawns them. The National and State Parks are wonderful. You really haven't lived until you've walked among those remarkable trees! I'm no "granola cruncher", but it's very nearly a "religious experience".
Good luck with whatever you decide. I'd be happy to provide additional info-you may feel free to contact me for more info on this website.

I've been in CC and Eureka, and just through Redding.
Love to visit the coast area north of Crescent City near Brookings to south of Crescent City. You wouldn't catch me ever living there. Not even if I could go back in time to being a young single man again.
Eureka? Have to scratch my head about that one.
Redding seems nice, but I'm a coastal region person. Need to live 2 hours or less from the ocean to be happy.
Curious - do you surf or something?
I'd take Grants Pass any day over CC or Eureka.

Redding, one really really must be able to tolerate/enjoy the HEAT.
I agree, Grants Pass would be my choice.

Crescent City, California
Hi, I just moved from Crescent City, Ca back to my hometown about two hours east and I lived there for eight years while my son went through junior and high school graduating in 2006. I work for my tribe right next to CCity in Klamath, CA and I commute two hours everyday one way to work.
I absolutely love Crescent City and the community there is great. We are Native American and we never experienced any negativity or horse crap what so ever while we lived there. My son was a star football player and wrestler so we made lifelong friends in the Del Norte County area for life. The weather is beautiful and having moved to Crescent City go get away from the heat over towards Redding, CA was nice as it gets warm but not ungoldy hot like 115+, usually around 90+ in Crescent City.
I bought a house in Crescent City and it is on the market for 179k I have been trying to sell it for the past 12 months and I have lowered the price a few times and decided that I wasn't going to lower it any further. The house if approximately 3-4 bloick from Pebble Beach (Pacific Ocean) and it is a three bedroom one bath house with a garage totalling approximately 1200 sq. ft.
Unless you are looking for some major heat then Redding is a good choice other then that if I had my choice I would choose Crescent City.
Good Luck

Agree that both Eureka & Crescent City are a bit "remote" and less dynamic than Redding. I have relatives who are in college in Arcata & it is "marijuana central" in California [good or bad
Redding is a nice community with so much outdoor activities but, as others have pointed out, it is horribly hot in summer.
