Places to live in SoCal
Looking to move to SoCal. Am looking to find a place with gated communities, very safe, has great restaurants, a Whole Foods (!), and nice malls. Lived in LA before, but am looking for a more laid back feel. Any info would be great - thanks!

Why do you want to move to CA?
What line of work are you in?
Where is your job located?
Rent or buy? Budget or Price Range?
Married?
Kids? Ages?
What color gates do you like?

Married, no kids. We don't go to bars - so night life is not a priority. CA has wonderful weather - we need lots of sunshine hours! Looked into Arizona but I think we prefer being surrounded by greenery. We thought gated for safety reasons. No restrictions due to job, and open budget. Last night was looking into Thousand Oaks seems really nice - thoughts?

You can find that in any of the larger cities in California. How "open" is your budget? That covers a wide range here.

Looking at 4-7,000 sqft house, would be nice to have some acreage but not a must. Safety is a priority.

Thousand Oaks is very nice for families and if you don't have to commute to LA. Excellent schools - low concerns for future resale. Very safe - no need for gate community, but there are some (Verdigris at the corner of Ave De Los Arboles and Westlake for example). Los Robles Hospital and lots of good medical facilities near by. Warmer than the coasts in summer but still very nice. Very pretty, leafy and green. Much of the area has common area and public area landscaping so it just looks nice - nothing ugly. Trader Joes and lots of shopping/walking/ice cream/coffee places in the Westlake Promenade (bumped into Wayne Gretzky in the theater there a couple years ago). Twenty to thirty pretty, no traffic, easy, minutes to nice clean safe friendly beaches.
Biggest negative: Traveling into the LA area for activities like theaters, Dodger Stadium, museums, etc. Traffic is almost always bad on the 101 and 405. However, you really don't need to, there is an outstanding Thousand Oaks Civic Arts theater and unbelievably, the Whizzins (Canyon Club in Agoura) theater. I just drove by Whizzins yesterday (here in CA on vacation this week), and I see the B-52s and Queensryche are playing there soon. All sorts of top name bands (from earlier eras) play there.

A relative swears by Newport Beach! Yep, that is my pick! Make sure you get your yacht painted aqua blue with white trim and red accents! Tres Magnifique!
