Yeah, California really is a joke so why don't you stay focused on your home = Pittsburgh, PA It is nothing more than boredom & envy that you and your Texas buds annoy us [like big Texas horse flies] in California.
The comment from one of your fellow yahoos clearly points out why Texas is so utterly different from California = "And we [Texas] execute our death row inmates." Texas is a Southern state with all the history of racism & ignorance. It is the cheapest place to live because no one else would live there otherwise [bottom dollar = Texas, where bigots & idiot fundies live with their Bibles in one hand and the American flag in the other
Please stay in Texas & let California go it's own direction because there is nothing we have in common other than the fact both states are in America [and nothing more thank God].

California is a joke, but I don't know why you keep mentioning Pittsburgh. I haven't mentioned it once. Perhaps you see that I'm posting in the Pittsburgh forum? Its because I'm thinking about moving back to the area. I'm currently in California and was born and raised in California.

Texas is not "utterly different from California". Texas as a whole is more conservative than California, but like California it has its liberal areas (think Austin) and its Conservative areas (the panhandle). California has rather conservative areas too, but you are most likely a transplant and don't know much about California. Go talk to the people in Kern County, not very different than the people in the Texas panhandle. Even your southern neighborhood (Orange County) is rather Republican and is home to one of the largest megachurch in the nation:
Saddleback Church - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In fact Southern California as a whole is not much different than Texas.

I don't agree with the death penalty, but people in both California and Texas agree with it. I also don't consider someone that agrees with it some redneck, its a complicated issue. Texas has its own history that is rather different than the South. Its pretty clear that you don't know much about Texas or California for that matter.

Texas is by no means the "cheapest place" and there are some rather expensive areas in the state. The reason it is affordable is not because nobody would live there otherwise, but rather because its easy and cheap to get building permits in the state. Texas does not try to limit the housing stock like California does. Also, the higher property taxes tend to reduce speculation in real estate in Texas where as California's prop 13 creates a volatile housing market that taxes the young and new residents to the state to benefit the older residents.
The reason why Texas is doing so much better than California is because they tax land instead of productivity. Economies grow because of production, not rent seeking. California's tax structure makes it a haven for rent-seekers, but hell for production.
Also, more people are leaving California than coming in. The only reason the state is increasing in population is from births (largely from its Mexican immigrants) and to a lesser degree immigrants from developing nations.
How exactly can you cheerlead for a state that has one of the highest unemployment rates, largest budget deficits, etc etc? Its amazing. And instead of thinking that perhaps the democratics in California have screwed up the state, you think more of them will fix it. Its funny....it reminds me of...oh yeah Bush and the people that still support him.

As can be expected much of what you said is wrong. Texas has the same sort of employee protections, medical coverage and standard of living (wages by themselves mean nothing, its how they relate to costs that matter).
Texas does have less unions though. Feel good that your tax dollars going to to funnel money to California unions and over paid state workers. Let me guess you work for the state....err...at least for now?
A lot.
No it does not.
Perhaps, if stopped letting your ideology control your thinking things would become a bit more clear.

Happ, what is it you do not understand about the difference between republicans and democrats versus liberals and conservtives. Lots of democrats are not liberal and your governor, though a registered Republican is certainly not even mildly conservative, not to mention what he has to work with.
When posters comment on government workers and salaries, they are right, I do not know if you do work for the state, city or county, but if you do, you are over-paid. My own brother works for the city of L.A. I am happy he makes the money he does and will have a wonderful retirement soon. MY father retired after 37 years from the city of L.A. He too had a retirement that would blow many minds. I am happy for them but think the salaries for the job done are about double what they should be and am glad I no longer have to help pay for them..
All in all, I think I would have to say, you may be the most biased person I have known for many years. California is a great place for some to live, but why can't you accept many people also have left the state or would like to leave because of the problems the state has? And yes, many of these people are moving to Texas as well as other states, like, AZ, NM and even OK and AR...
If you didn't know this and you obviously didn't, Texas is by far not a poor state and though they fought for the south, most considered it a SoWest State, not a southern state...

My issue, as I have previously posted, is that some people who live in places like Texas\ Arkansas\ Pittsburgh, etc. jump into California threads only to put down the state & make unrelated & false statements. How would you feel if Californians barged into Texas\ Arkansas threads to always criticize & put down your state? Who in California even bothers with other state forums [we don't care, quite frankly
Look at Arkansas, a state so homophobic & backward that it is considered an embarrassment to the nation! And the great Texas governor has declined "stimulus" money for unemployed people. If such as dumb decision was made in California, there would be a recall ASAP.
Let's face it, life in California is much better for those who value progressive thinking not found in Arkansas or Texas. Nita, you are a native Californian but left to live in Arkansas [good for you] but some of your comments suggest a "sour grapes" attitude [a divorce sometimes makes people want the other to be miserable].
And D-Towner & user_id don't live here yet have a deep dislike for California, for whatever reason. It makes one wonder what the obsession is with bagging on California [do we go out of our way to put-down Texas & Pennsylvania?
I am a 4th generation Californio w/ ancestors going back to Spanish California before America invaded & took California away from Mexico 150 yrs ago. I have a very large extended family that live from Arcata to San Diego & every place in between. I left California to attend college near Chicago & studied\ worked in New York City for several years. I have been to Texas at least a half a dozen times for conferences in Houston\ Dallas & San Antonio. I have driven thru Texas & even have an aunt in Canyon, Texas.
The governor of California has to represent the people; when they don't we kick them out [ie Davis]. Schwarzenegger thought he could govern like a Republican until every initiative he proposed in his first year were overwhelming voted down by the people. Being intelligent [unlike many Republicans] Arnold quickly altered his priorities & essentially became a Democrat in order to best represent the people of California. So when Republicans [who voted for Schwarzenegger] bad mouth him, they are actually bad mouthing the majority of Californians! That's why it is pathetic when Republicans hate on California [and a divorce is recommended]. Move away or accept that you are out of sync with your fellow Californians.

see how little you know? We did not leave to live in AR, many have, but we did not...We left to move to Wash DC, then we lived in Dallas for 13 years. When we decided to retire we went to NM> But by the urging of our kids and a few other things we decided to get closer to them. We did not want to go back to the humidity and crowds in Texas, thus we discovered Bella Vista.
Actually I do not think I blast Ca much. I think it has lots to offer, just not for us..I do think the crowds, crime and cost of living are out of sight..
Where did you come up with the notion AR is so homophobic it is an embarrassment to our country? Again, how little you know about our state. Like Ca, there are many areas and views in AR. Fayetteville has a large gay and lesbian commuity as do some other cities in the state. Eureka Springs is very artsy and very gay I may add. The very small, farm communities are more inclined to be relegious right and yes, narrow minded, but not the entire state and I doubt AR would be considered an embarrassment for that reason.
As for Texas, going to conferences and even driving through the state or a small area in the state certainly isn't any way to judge it..
Do Ca go to other state forums, they sure do....check out NM, TX, AR, AZ and I am sure others...

You may not hate California but you clearly have an obsession with California that is not healthy. Maybe you should concentrate on Texas where your Republican governor is denying unemployment benefits to your own state residents. What a creep! you & your stupid governor!

If you think he has an unhealthy obsession I would suggest you go back and read your comments...Anyone who sees things only from one side like you has an unhealthy view in my opinion and that is all it is, an opinion...Most of us can say, Ca may not be for us, but it has lots of positives, you think no place but Ca has any positives and that everyone must think exactly the way you do or be proven wrong...
