Hi,
We retired 2.5 years ago and moved to Texas to live on a lake. Texas is just not our cup of tea. After we sell our home here in Texas, we will be moving back to California. We are beach people. We used to live oceanfront in California. So we will be moving back to the beach, hopefully soon. We miss everything about California and can't wait to be back.
We are young retirees (40) and we have no children so moving is no big deal for us. So hope to be there soon and help save some critters (dolpins, seals, you name it, we saved them) LOL.

Roma, would you be willing to offer a few specifics about Texas? Like what part of the state were you in? Was it the climate? The people? The housing stock? The character of the neighborhood/city? The range of activities? What was it that you found disappointing?

Hi Kettlepot,
For us it is a few things but some of the reasons we are moving back to California are:
The weather. (I was spoiled in So. Calif where I lived)
The bugs. (you get them here in Texas with the weather (hot and humid)
No ocean. (they have the Gulf but it does not compare at all)
The people are generally friendly in Texas as they were where I was from in Calif. I didn't see a big difference there. So it's not because of the people.
The houses are a lot less expensive in Texas then Calif (no brainer there)
So it was not the housing.
It just is mainly the climate and no ocean and that we are Californians even thou my husband and I were not even born in Calif. We just feel like Californians and it fits us. We love the weather in Calif, the people, the look and style, the natural beauty and how there is so much to do (activities) in So. Calif.
But I can't bash Texas. It is what it is and Texas fits some people like California fits some people.
We live on a lake in a large home on 5 acres in a quaint little Texas town. I am in Granbury, which is 30 minutes south west of Fort Worth. We are young retirees and Granbury is pretty much just that. (retirees and people owning second homes on the lake but maybe not young, LOL).
I will miss my home and land on the lake in Texas. I just wish it was in California (that would be perfect) (with a ocean view) (Heaven).
I also want to add that we have no regrets moving to Texas and we are glad that we could experience it and how it made us appreciate more of what we had in California and how much more we will appreciate California when we return.

My son and I moved from Carlsbad to Savannah, GA almost two years ago. We miss San Diego for several reasons. We agree that we miss the California mentality. Personally, the weather in San Diego is too cold but I'm willing to dress in layers to be amongst people who accept one another regardless of skin color. I work for a great company in Savannah but there is not one person of color that works for or with us. That bothers me. Also, living in a place where everyone thinks they know the personal business of others is elementary. When there's not much to do people here shame others too freely. We are looking forward to the day our home sells and we can return to San Diego.

Moved to Las Vegas. Its basically a suburb of L.A. Pretty easy to adapt, much cheaper housing too.

Hope more people post up in this thread.
I'm 3rd generation Californian. My husband and I are thinking of moving out-of-state (have a few other states in mind but haven't settled on one specific one yet). My husband isn't native to California, so he's done the move from state to state before.
Even though I like the thought of moving... it terrifies me at the same time. I like reading others "cons" list so I can see if those cons are really concerns I'm having.

i'm sorry i can't contribute to the thread...my wife and daughtr and i moved out of CA, and we call our new place home, and would NEVER think of moving back to CA. Not in a million years, thats how much we love where we're at, and dislike CA.
People move every day, and succeed, and are happy, but the problems arise whe people move without doing ENOUGh research on the REAL world important issues. Housing prices, schools, and cost of living only get you so far, but the things that really matter: racial tolerance/acceptance, Political climate, mentality, etc, are all just as important. We took many trips back and forth to where we wanted to move to before deciding...
I just hope more people put in the research where it matters, in the future.

Very true. This illustrates the incredible value of City-Data forums. The internet has all the hard data anyone would ever need. CD provide subjective, "soft" data; It fills in the cracks. You can get a feel of the social and demographic climate.

I have to agree here....we are also among those that have moved from CA. We moved last year and I too was scared but excited also. I was born and raised my whole life in CA. We just got tired of working so hard for so little. Also we wanted to retire and it would have been difficult to do so in CA. There are so many wonderful places but as was said here, do your research first. If possible go and vacation areas of interest. We have not had any problems with our move and are very happy with our decision even though I left my family and friends in CA. and miss them terribly I wouldn't move back now. Life is an adventure...make it an adventure!!
