There are 2 states that are not normal: Calif and Florida.
Calif has a wacky govt. Florida produces a ton of news stories involving some truly demented people. Hence, Calif and Florida get a lot of people talking about them.

I'm one outsider that doesn't hate (or even dislike) the state, the people or the government and I love to watch your news, always something interesting going on.
I often joked with my California attorneys that so Californians are "the way they are" because they are all high on wacky weed. Much of La county is in a bowl and the haze often just hangs over it. That haze is wacky weed smoke. The cops burn wacky weed fields and the smoke just hangs over the bowl getting everyone high and if that's not enough the sun frys their brains. It's no wonder so Californians are (different?) - LOL
Hope this is a good chuckle for you!

Reminds me of a joke on "Laugh In" [way back in the 1970's]. Goes something like this: "The people of Los Angeles are so frustrated with the smog that they are willing to try anything. One solution involved the massive burning of marijuana over the LA basin to replace the smog. It turned out that the marijuana smoke didn't help curb smog but everybody didn't seem to care anymore

Nah no chuckles ... just a case of another non- Californians senseless stereotyping.[/quote]
Apparently it also depletes the sense of humor of some!

LOL this is so NOT TRUE. I'll say it and y'all will hate me for it but here it goes........... I'm not trying to be cruel but you want truth.
I lived in San Diego 6 years... 6 LONG years and I'll tell you why I HATE California and will never go back (never- not to visit, not to a funeral- never). It's the culture. People are self absorbed and just plain rude (not all, but IN GENERAL). There is no sense of community for the most part in So Cal (except when houses are burning down) and there's a lot of 'keeping up with the Jones' (hence So Cals complete bubble burst housing market crisis being insane even in comparison to other regions). Now add to that that cost of living is ridiculous ($400 electric bills, $7 bottle of ketchup at Vons, $570K for a house a few years back) it's a very undesirable place.
As to why people don't like Californians- again, culture. Being from another state that has a long and rich history of hatred for Californians we see them as a problem- they move into our beautiful small towns and drive up housing prices by paying full price (in turn driving up our taxes) and hurt the culture by their self-motivated uncaring nature and next thing you know the whole area is over run by Californians. In fact, in my state we have a couple nifty bumper stickers... one reading "Californians GO HOME" and "Native". I know a lot of good Californian jokes

I can't say i ever remember posting in the California forum.. but i browse on occasion. I grew up in California, and have been pretty much all over the entire state in the 18 years i spent there. Having traveled most of the country since then, I can easily say that California is low on my list of places i would settle back down in.

I think some of the "hatred" for California is that it represents the future. In urban areas people rarely get involved in neighborhoods regardless the state or city. I am lucky to live on a street where we do have get-togethers on occasion but only about half the people attend [and that's OK]. Small town America is being replaced with large cities that are more individual-oriented than community [good or bad].

I wonder how many Californians even read threads in other state forums? Who would spend so much time criticizing a state they don't even live in & for many, have never been to California.
Seems like close to half the posters in the California forum don't live here yet many share their hate for our state over and over again.
Why is it that non-Californians seem to be so involved in our state's affairs & gladly toss in their ugly comments about our great state?

I guess I haven't seen it that way, not only have I not seen that many post really hateful things about Ca, I don't think there are many who post here that do not have some connection to California. Some lived there for many years, some are planning on moving to the state and others know a lot about the state..
I am one, but I do not think I have even said or indicated the state is awful nor do I hate it. I was raised in Calif, we left because of a job opportunity, we did choose not to return, though many who left with us did return. We have 3 kids, 2 would not move back if someone gave them Ca, our son, if he could afford to would be on the next plane. WE are avid Dodger fans, love USC (well I do, hubby is a UCLA guy) and we like the Lakers. We just prefer to live a quieter life with less crime, lower cost of living and less crowds..We also do not understand why so many people think Ca is heaven here on earth..
For all who would never want to live in CA there are 100s mainly very young, want to be's that think they can come to Ca and find success, happiness and a new life. Most have never even seen the state or have visited for a few days.
I don't know about everyone, but jealousy has nothing to do with it in my opinion..
Mainly it is more the way the state is run today compared to 30 or 40 years ago and not the state itself. Ca has a lot to offer, it's government is not part of that...

If California is the future, the country is doomed.

Calling it the future isn't accurate.
A lot of things start here and then spread to the rest of the US. Fashion, slang terms, political things.... The entertainment industry has a lot to do with it.
Calif is more of a trendsetter than it is futuristic. There is a difference.
