A lot of people think Cal is nothing but LA and SF with a couple of Redwood Trees and Sea Lions thrown in. Most Americans are just plain ignorant when it comes to geography. I unfortunately live in the Land of Entrapment: dried up, disease and nuclear waste ridden New Mexico at this time [no offense intended] and often when locals ask me where I'm from and I say "NY" they walk away. So now I say "Vermont" or "all over". Remember, dear, their just jealous; next time they ask where you're from just say "Beverly Hills" and that will kill them with envy.

I am not sure you are making much sense or I am just confused...I don't think most people are jealous, as many on here left Ca because they were not happy. If they are jealous, why would you say you are from BH? As for your view of NM, I would totally disagree. You talk about some of the wonderful places in Ca like Mendocino, NM has some awesome and beautiful places as well. The only thing I do agree with you on is the lack of knowledge many have when it comes to Geography. In all fairness though, I would expect most people to totally know about Ca or NY for that matter. They are very diverse and large states..Yes, most people think of Ca as Hollywood, the beach and San Francisco.

oops---I mean the 6th borough of NYC. It's hard to think clearly at 7000' elevation no oxygen in Santa Fe New Mexico. Most people don't know that, contrary to popular opinion the greatest old civilizations were located near sea level and oxygen deprivation at high elevation aka altitude sickness is very unhealthy, potentially fatal and even for folks born at high elevations the scarce oxygen is very hard on their bodies. Every year many tourist fain here for lack of air and others have heart attacks--especially those with a smoking history--but this is never in the papers.

that's a great come back! But unfortunately, some people [like in Texas] claim that former Californians who move into their state are making it worse for them. One poster stated that Austin has been ruined by Californians! This seems to suggest acute paranoia & insecurity.

nmita--Apparently you are from New Mexico? which, crimewise, educationwise, dwi-wise, worker benefitswise, teenpregnancywise, juvenile crimewise, healthcare wise, corruptionwise is almost always rated at the bottom with mississippi and alabama. The joke here, as you might know is that NM is a 3rd world country. Half the people in this state are living in 3rd world conditions. Hanta Virus, the Plague, America's only nuclear waste dump in Albq.--beautiful scenery? Some like apple pie some like cherry pie--some the ocean--some the mountains. Check out Monterrey's 16 mile drive--Sonoma Co's Goat Rock Pk: breathtaking absolutely breathtaking--like heaven. Check out the coast of Maine. Personally I have no use for umpteen miles of desolate endless weeds and Hanta Virus, Plague, styleless barbarian trailer-like $750K mud houses, plutonium [adds a lovely red glow to the sunsets]-strontium filled dust blowing from Los Alamos and NM uranium mines. I cannot wait to return to civilization. CA--depends what part you refer to--I have lived 3 years in CA--San Diego, Marin Co, and Sonoma--I have traveled in every US state but Alaska and Hawaii. California--esp the coast has by far the most beautiful vistas anywhere in the continental US. As General Sherman said in 1975 when he visited Santa Fe--We should make Mexico take the state back. Geography--Americans are some of the most ethnocentric self centered people in the world--just compare USA Today with BBC. Most Americans think Honduras is in South America and have no clue where Romania, Burma or the Gaspe are. I have had many people back east ask me--seriously--after I told them I moved to NEW Mexico after falling for the SFe shrewd boosterism: What kind of money is used here and why I left the U.S. Only good thing about New Mex besides the old Spanish and Indian families is that it has some of the most stable weather in the US which is probably one reason the Los Alamos atom bomb factory was located here where they are still busy making atom bombs, discovering chemical and radioactive leaks into the environment and old nuclear bomb dumps and parts which were supposedly long forgotten. One tiny speck of inhaled plutonium will kill a human. The New Mex--esp Santa Fe boosterism is very deceitful: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Got to go clean the humidifier, dust blown in the house, and then take a walk in hopes that none of New Mexico's huge number of uninsured, unlicensed, intoxicated motorists don't run me over. Tootaloo!

re OP, bek of some really bad behavior which we export?
my 1st impression of west coast america (absent for 5 years never been to the coast) was oakland airport, the country where i came from was rainy dark and wet 6 months of the year, when they opened the door of the plane at oakland airport in dec it was a field of blooming ice plant in the sunset, wow. when i got to san fran and sat in a park. (people sit in parks alot where i came from) beautiful palm tree breeze blue sky sun. but the people
---- looked like somebody kicked over a rock.
been like that ever since 30 years.

Well to be honest. I think people who left for whatever reason do dislike CA. But a lot of people from other states do like CA.

Another reason we left...I have no lung problems, thank goodness (did smoke til not long ago) the doctor said my breathing wasn't caused by any true health problems even though I have a few minor heart problems, but I was one of those who just could never adjust to the high altitude...I will take the humidity here any day over the dry heat and high altitude: we were 5000 ft.
Nita
ps I never saw so many people on oxygen as we saw in NM..

wow, I know how you feel about NM, but you certainly haven't read my posts much. NO, I am not from NM, I was born and raised for over 40 years in So Cal,lived all over the state of Ca and am now living in AR> I think you may know this my now. I agree with much of what you say about the state, but I still think it has a beauty all it's own..The sunrises and sunsets are the best we have seen, the truely purple mountains when the sun is just starting to set, even the drive along 40 from ABQ to the AZ state line has some awesome scenery, or drive to Mountainair or up toward Taos..I could go on and on...These are the things we miss and we miss our wonderful friends. Most of the rest of the state and its problems you can keep. Oh, yes, as you mentioned the weather, take away the dirty, filthy, wind...
