It seems to be most represented in the movies, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Pasadena etc seem to be among the most filmed areas outside Hollywood, Beverly Hills. To me it represents archetypal Hollywood suburban California more than say Downey or Compton or Venice Beach.

Pasadena will indeed be in the San Fernando Valley after the "big one" strikes.

Pasadena is in the San Gabriel Valley, and doesn't in any way resemble "archetypal Hollywood suburban California."

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "suburban region," (would Orange County count? If so, then that's more famous than the SFV) but I agree that the "Valley" is pretty well known (although not understood) outside of LA.

It was back in the 1970's and 1980's but now its definitely Orange County with all the recent shows set in it.

Yeah I'd say Orange County is the most famous suburb of the LA area.

Most of the valley also seems awfully urban to me too...more urban than a lot of other major American cities.

I don't know... I feel the San Fernando Valley, Orange County, and South Central are all equally well known.

I'd say even through the 90's. But in the new millenium Orange County is more well known. But the OC folks would tell you that they are not a suburb of LA and want nothing to do with LA.
