"Nightmares are subjective". Like the nightmare of Arkansas' racial\ sexual prejudice [you can have it, sister
Sexual prejudice depends on what you mean and where you live in the state, just like it does most places. That goes for racial prejudice as well. I think Ar is as open to racial minorities as almost any state..

You're either kidding or got some serious blinders.
Yes it is. It's just not everyone's cup-o'-tea, nor does it need to be and those not so enamored of it needn't be ridiculed for their opinions. Since birth I've seen CA through every decade since the '40s. I loved it when I was young but I'm not happy with all too many of the changes that have taken place since, especially over the last 30-40 years, nor need I be. To each their own.

neither, give me an example of racial prejudise in Ar? Don't go the KKK route, it is almost non existant anymore..
Of course we are getting off the subject now, as the subject wasn't about Ar, but I do get tired of people, who do not live here and probably never have thinking they know so much about the state.
No, I do not live in Ca, but I did for 40 plus years..and do I know everything about the state? Hell no, but I do know a few things..
What do you really know about AR other than what you have been told by someone else that doesn't really know.??

According to your posts you obviously have never been to Eureka Springs, and probably have never even been to the state of Arkansas for that matter.
Trust me people, there are PLENTY of native Californians that are VERY happy with their choice to move out of Ca. I run into them all of the time.
I'm also sure that there are plenty of people vice versa in their moves that are very happy as well, and good for them!! Sometimes change is good. Some of you "natives" need to get a grip (or explore some of the rest of the nation firsthand). California is not the end all be all for everyone.

Nita, yes you know about California but no, you do not know about Arkansas. I think your little patch is far removed from the dreadful remnants of racial bigotry. But you are a Californian living in a state you do not really know much about other than the scenery. Please goggle Arkansas over recent repressive anti-gay bigotry [the worst in the nation, I'm afraid].
Curmudgeon, I'm with you [maybe 10 yrs later] but grew up in the Sacramento valley\ Chico & have seen orchards uprooted for housing\ smog now a big problem in San Joaquin valley [where I was born]. We can't escape reality & not everyone is willing to leave California for a little more space elsewhere [esp if elsewhere is in the South]. I live in LA & know what over-crowding has produced but my home is in the hills in a semi-woodland w/ space & quiet. Maybe I would feel different if I lived in an apartment in the city. But I know I can move back to Chico w/ family if & when I feel like moving back to the country. I don't have to give up California. Have you considered the upper Sacramento Valley?

If you read what I said earlier, I mentioned gay bigotry does exist in certain parts of our state, but racial prejudice pretty much does not. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. California has areas where alternative life styles are not accepted, everywhere does. Hopefully someday this will change. If you are referring to the Article 1 (or proposition as you call them in Ca) on our last ballot. It not passing was horrible, but the I would like to add, which again, people not living here are not aware of, the way it was worded many thought by voting for it, they were voting against it..
For a state as small as ours we have several cities and towns that totally welcome the gay life style...

Considered it and set it aside. Was tempted by Paradise where I have a daughter, her husband and three grandchildren living. However, being retired I am most concerned by what I see as repressive taxes and general cost of living increases. A dozen years ago when my wife and I married we started from ground-zero financially. I'd lost everything in a divorce, and faced many years of child support. My wife had raised her two daughters as a single mother for 16 years with no support of any kind for the girls from her ex. We faced a choice of buying and being house poor or having a more enjoyable quality of life and saving/investing for the future and a house elsewhere. We chose the latter.
As I believe I've pointed out, I have lived in eight states, my wife in four. Many of those were southern and one was mid-western. Missouri is a nice combination of the two regions and that appeals to us, as does the cost of living, pace of life and other things we both value.
I would love it if California was what it was but will never be again. Such is the "blessing" of progress and my unwillingness to embrace many of those changes the "curse" of age. From a practical perspective we have a total of seven children and nine grandchildren scattered literally from coast-to-coast so locating more centrally makes not just financial but logistical sense as well.
I'm glad for you that you're content here. I don't happen to be. Another reality is that after being raised in the military, as was my wife, and spending many years in it myself, living all those places as well as four other countries we have itchy feet, having each spent the last 31 years in this state and we look forward to new vistas and the adventure of it all while we're still young enough to enjoy it and old enough to savor peace and quiet and a slower pace of life. This has been long planned for.
As Gavin Newsome would say, "It's going to happen, whether you like it or not!

Didnt Californians, twice, vote to NOT legalize same sex marriage? If so I dont think Arkansas holds the deed to prejudice.
Thanks for the thoughtful responses, Nita & Curmudgeon. Your relocation elsewhere speaks well of you & you are spreading a more civilized example to the states you live in. They say the reason both Nevada & Colorado voted for Obama was because of ex-Californians moving there
I had the opportunity to attend school outside Chicago & then live & study in NYC [so I experienced a total of 7 yrs outside California]. Both cities were quite different from California but the same mindset. I know a little about Missouri & loved water skiing in the Lake of the Ozarks a few times. I have some relatives outside the state [even an aunt in Texas] but everyone else is here.
I know I get defensive when people from other states complain about California [have you ever looked at other forums?
