Default Illegal immigration continues to slow in California

From latimes.com:

"After years of rapid growth, illegal immigration has slowed in California, with the state's share of the nation's 11.9 million undocumented migrants dropping by nearly half to 22% from 42% since 1990, according to a new study released today by the Pew Hispanic Center.

The study found that California is still home to the nation's largest concentration of illegal immigrants, numbering 2.7 million last year, but that more of them have dispersed to Georgia, North Carolina and other states."

You cited Joel Kotkin in another thread - he wrote an article in the short lived business magazine The American earlier this year in which he cited that Texas has now surpassed California as the leading destination for Mexican illegal immigrants (as opposed to those already in CA) due to the better economy there and cited some stats to prove it. Unfortunately the article isn't available online.

(As I said, while I do have definite disagreements with Kotkin he is right about some things.)

I'm American and I can't find work here - I'm thinking of fleeing to Mexico. Maybe they've got something for me. No work = major depression for me.

Good. I hope by the time they decide to come back, we''ll have the military down there to greet them.

Many illegal immigrants heading home - Los Angeles Times
"The recession and an increase in workplace raids have forced some unauthorized workers to return to their homelands."
"...people such as Jorge-Mario Cabrera, an El Salvador native and immigration activist, said he is sending both messages to relatives to dissuade them from coming here.

"The message to family members is think twice before coming here," said Cabrera, a spokesman for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. "Not only will you find a dearth of job opportunities, you will also find an environment that is very anti-immigrant, with raids and deportations."
Hallelujah. At least there's one good result of the economic recession.

Yeah, but then a weak economy sucks for the rest of us too! I guess right about now would be the perfect time to build the Great Wall of California, and have US citizen's and legal immigrants build it so they can have jobs and boost the economy. Plus when things get better we won't have to worry about a down pour of illegals burdening our state budget.

well that's a great start...do you think it's too late? Things were bad when I left in 2001, can't imagine how awful it is now...although my people still keep me up on what's going on.
