Their is always time for surfing I always say. But then I grew up in an area that I see the ocean every day. I don't live on the beach but I see the waves and they seem to call to me. That part of life out here is laid back. Then again I don't have the freedom to surf when ever I want. My kids love to eat and they kind of like having a home over their heads. Another thing to remember that out of the 35 plus million people not all of them live on the beach or even as close to it as I do. For the majority that lifestyle is the thing of song, movies, tv shows, or some other thing.

People won't get all up in your face and business as much and will kind of have a "whatever" attitude to certain situations that would might otherwise stress or aggravate others. It's just not as faced paced and rushed as the east coast, at least San Diego. LA and SF are more fast paced but the suburbs are still pretty laid back imo. We still gotta to work, pay the bills, and do all the regular stuff as everyone else but we do it w/o stressing out and still know how to enjoy life for the most part. Also when you live around some amazing weather and scenery and take time to enjoy it, it is very relaxing. During summer after a stressful day at work or a after a god awful 1 hour commute home in traffic, going to the beach and watching the sunset really does relax me and helps me forget about a crappy day.

Truth.
East coast is all about getting places and things done on time. If it takes 5 minutes longer or you are a little bit late to things they get all pissy. They get pissed in drive throughs, while we just chill and wait for the in-n-out burger. No point in complaining when all you can do is wait.

They get pissed for everything. It is my least favorite thing about the area. I have seen so many NY freakouts in my life....

Here's a difference:
At Angel Stadium, the fans throw tortillas (or used to).
At the Philly stadium, they throw syringes (or used to).

I'm a Midwesterner and get pissy. The "real" East Coast types just think they do it better.
I would imagine if you lived and "worked" in Manhattan Beach, life would be somewhat casual.

i lived that lifestyle for a while during the 1980s. I lived somewhat frugally, ate lots of cheap guac (from avos that were "excess") and hung out a lot at the beach.
Would be tough to pull off today, given rents (even with current downturn related housing cost decreases).

BayAreaHillbilly, it can still be done in some locales depending on how you live. I knew a guy that went to school in evening, worked 11pm til 7am and slept at the beach. He went to the college gym to work out and shower.

I lived in LA in the 90s.... but I woke up a week after the Northridge quake and asked myself '....what do I want out of life?' That said, I moved to back to Florida. Life is easy going here and I live at half the cost of anywhere in California... 30 minutes to MIA, 3 hours to Bogota, 6 hours to Rio de Janeiro, 4 hours to Manaus (Amazon) 8 hours to Barcelona (all direct flights: $200-Colombia, $400 Brazil and $500 Barcelona; round trip). I own a large home, a Corvette, R1 sportbike, self employed with minimal debt that frees me up to travel and enjoy life. Oh, forgot to add, no kids, no alimoney, no child support. If I stayed in LA, I'd be another 9-5er busting my booty like most of you good folks here.
People complain about Florida's humidity, low wages, etc. Well, I chose to leave LA, and I'm typing this post on the Beach in South Spain (Marbello) with my Brazilian princess.
Warren Buffett can live anywhere, but he chose to live in a small mid-western town. Perhaps some of you might want to learn a thing or two from Master Warren? California, for all it's accolades, up to the late 80s was a great place to be... I cant say it is anymore.
