Idaho girl moving to Eureka
I'm moving from a small Idaho town of 500 people to go to college in Eureka. I'm going to College of the Redwoods. Is that a good place to start? I want to transfer to Humboldt State after two years. What are these schools really like? Will I make it? That's what I would really like to know.

Of course you'll make it. Probably half or more of the population in California is made up of transplants from other places. Once the culture shock wears off you'll do just fine!

CR, College of the Redwoods, is doing very well right now. I believe they were just re accredited. HSU, Humboldt State University has seen a down turn in enrollment and an increase in its tuition. CR is actually closer to Fortuna then Eureka and Fortuna is a small town of around 7,000, where as Eureka is itself 28,000, not including Cutten or Myrtletown. Fortuna is friendlier than Eureka and has less crime, it is called the Friendly City on the Welcome to Fortuna sign. Fortuna is about 10 miles south of Eureka, and Arcata, where HSU is located, is 6 miles north of Eureka. Fortuna is also on the Eel River, is inland and is much warmer than Eureka in the summer. I, myself, would much rather live in Fortuna than Eureka. I live in McKinleyville which is 12 miles north of Eureka.

Full or part time?
Will you be working?
What will be your room and board situation?
Do you know what you will be majoring in?
Do you have a career goal? What is it?
What is your high school GPA?
What is your SAT or ACT score?

Bring lots of money for the first year, when you will be paying out-of-state fees. After that it's $20 a unit, gets spendy again if you go to Humboldt State. CR has an excellent website. Depending on your major, you may wish to relocate to Chico State when the time comes. I hope you have a car because the local transit is adequate, no more. You'll want to have a car to explore the local area.I assume you've visited the local area? The dorms at CR fill up early
and other housing is not real close to the school. Good luck! CR is a good choice for a first college.
