It's practically always more difficult for legitimate immigrants to get in compared to illegals. That's why they're sneaking in.

To the OP, there is hardly any shortage of teachers who are US citizens. The shortages are the money to pay them and the willingness of taxpayers to pay more taxes.

Teaching does not look like a growth industry at the present time. You should consider alternatives.

You should be able to land a job in what passes for Ye Olde British Pubs in California. They love someone with an accent to further the deception.

Default Work Visa May Be Hard To Obtain

I came over here when I was around your age, but about 30 years ago.
I had a job lined up - was recruited in London. Getting a work visa J-1 or H-1 I think took about 6 months - they have to advertise the position locally and not get any acceptable applications. Visa then has to be renewed each year up to 3 years total as I remember but you can apply for permanent residency. Then after 5 years you can apply for citizenship.
Don't rely on this info - since I may be wrong or out of date - get legal advice.
In my case I met a local girl and got married which solved the visa problem, and no I didn't marry her for the green card - we just celebrated our 26th anniversary.

I have two daughters about your age - one working, one still in college. Ironically the younger one, born near Chicago and raised in California wants to go and live in Japan! Now there's a place where it's easy to get a job teaching English.

I may be able to answer questions, or maybe my daughters can, if you email or message me through my handle - not sure how the forum does email.
