The far northern coast is kind of like California's Vermont - Vermonters in California (especially L.A. and O.C.) are often asked why they'd leave a place that Californians regard as being like heaven on earth, and they'll always respond by mentioning VT's unemployment rates (before the current recession gave CA a worse unemployment rate than VT)

I am sorry that you hate Humboldt County so much. I have lived here since 1992 and I rather prefer the isolation compared to the overwhelmingly crowded conditions of the S. F. Bay area. To each their own.

Here is a site for the Times Standard newspaper and Humboldt counties Tri City Weekly. I wish the best of luck and hope your stay this time is more bearable.

Tri-City Weekly

I remembered one more local paper, Fortuna's Humboldt Beacon.

Default Understood!

I LIVE here and I can perfectly well understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea. I have to take a break from it every now and then.
There's a real estate company called Consolidated Management, 707 441 0981 that should have listings. Also call Frank Scolari at Coldwell Banker Cutten and see if they have anything. 707 445 8822. Good luck!

I think the marijuana culture of the North Coast could turn off some people [ie. panhandling, public weed smoking].

That's what I don't like about the North Coast... a couple of friends of mine moved up to Humboldt JUST for the weed. I may be one of the 'weird' mid twenty year olds in CA but I HATE weed and I really can't stand 99% of weed smokers. I understand the medical thing (which is why I say 99%) but the recreational smokers are just terrible.

In all the time that I have lived here, I have yet to see any public weed smoking. Now for the panhandling, it is quite annoying in Arcata and a bother in Eureka. There are very few panhandlers or vagrants in McKinleyville, we do not tolerate it as much as Arcata does. This time of year, Arcata is crawling with vagrant adults and sub adults.

There is a public "smoke in" at a state beach each year & certainly the smell of marijuana smoke along Arcata streets is not uncommon [good or bad]. I used to work in downtown LA & encountered the same problem of pan-handling & weed smoking [they seem to go hand in hand]. Isn't marijuana the biggest cash export from Humboldt county?

It would seem that way. I remember just before I left last December, there was a movie out, not sure how widespread the showing was, but it was titled "Humboldt County," and was all about weed and smoking.

How are they terrible? Everything is relative, but they are certainly no worse than social drinkers.
