What this guy said. Eureka is far safer than your average big city. I am tired of all the sterotypical "drug problem" everyone seems to mention every time a small town comes up.

Poster: "How is it living in ______ small town?"

Response: "Oh, they have a huge drug problem. It's more dangerous than living in Oakland."

GTFO with all that BS.

Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco have Million Dollar neighborhoods that are as safe as any low to no crime areas in any state, city or country. The "Big City" is not all ghetto's and panhandlers. Plenty of families walk through them with no problems every day.

Yes, they have million dollar pockets but don't act like Oakland is some prosperous, nice city. You missed my point anyways.

Even so, Oakland's violent crime rate, especially the murder rate, is much higher than Eureka's. Sure, you can live in a safe and beautiful part of town--if you can afford it.

It is a nice prosperous city with a medium income and home value that is better than most of the country and even the state, all cities have their problems. The south bronx is not representative of all of New York City. I didn't miss your point, you missed mine. Unless you plan on hanging out in the ghetto's and selling dope then what are you scared of?

Oakland is 15 Times the size in population and even bigger in area. Like I said, unless you plan on selling dope or joining a gang what are you scared of? Most crime victims in Oakland are targets for a reason. Its funny how the media can control peoples perception. You're safer in Oakland than San Francisco.

In order to really understand the prevailing culture of Humboldt County, you will have to do some research into the mythical State of Jefferson and the not-so-mythical "state of mind" that one encounters there. Here's a start. A State of Mind

Default Eureka is not that bad

We live in Fortuna, but I have worked in Eureka for many years. Yes, there are druggies, gangs, crimes, etc., but it's not all bad. We, like many families, moved out of Eureka into Fortuna for a safer place to raise our kids. But, there is the same stuff going on in "The Friendly City". We lived in Eureka for years and had no trouble at all, but we've had several things stolen from our yard in Fortuna. We were fed up with the drug problem here and seriously checked into several places to relocate our family. What I found out from talking to people who live there, is that everywhere is experiencing these problems - drugs, crime, etc. It's true there isn't a lot of job opportunity here and there are a lot of "hippies" and drugs are pretty much accepted here, but it all about the company you keep. If you stay out of trouble and out of the bad crowds, you'll be fine. Humboldt has a lot of beautiful things to off.

Have stayed in Fortuna several times since the early '90s albeit at
one of the motels by the Eel River Brewing Co. Humboldt County
has a lot to offer although employment is challenging, and drug
issues, as we know, come with the territory.

We've thought about relocating there, but the cost of housing tends
to be rather high for that region. Will probably look into the south-
western part of Oregon north of Grants Pass.
