Swine Flu in California
According to the news swine flu cases have been reported in San Diego\ Imperial valley & Sacramento. I believe all the people were recently visiting Mexico. Some people may not even know that they are carriers of swine flu since all the cases in the U.S. have been mild [ie. temp over 100F\ aches\ upper respiratory symptoms].
In Mexico, however, over 100 people have died of this new & serious virus. Do you think swine flu will become widespread in California?

Apparently 150 about have died in Mexico. Will it become widespread in America? My guess is no and for a couple of reasons: 1-we are taking precausions, which Mexico was not able to do in time: 2-we have better health facilities and better sanitation and 3-we don't have the crowded living conditions we often see in other countries including Mexico.

Good points, Nita. Normally the flu season is coming to an end by May but concern is what next year's flu season may include swine flu if it becomes widespread. What concerns public health officials is that this strain of flu is new & seems to be worse for normally healthy young adults

Not everyone in this country has insurance and if it were to be a problem in this country it would greatly affect the poor and or the people that recently lost health insurance due to a job loss. Also, of course children and the elderly are at high risk plus people who travel a lot. There is a potential for there to be a break out of much concern in the US because there is no vaccination against the flu and the flu kills thousands a year. The recent flu strains that have mutated over the last few years have been an increasing problem. CNN reported on their site that there was a huge pandemic flu outbreak in 1968 that killed I believe it was 100 million people (not exactly sure of the total but it was up there).

Don't kiss pigs and you'll be okay for now. Like Jay Leno said tonight on his show, his recent illness was caused by eating raw pork from Mexico!

Do you go to the Leno show today? I think they tape in the late afternoon, right?

No, I've never been to Leno's show, although it would probably be a kick. I saw excerpts from the evening local news on our ABC affiliate.
I hope I'm awake to watch Leno's opening monologue. I bet he'll be in grand dudgeon tonight.
I usually run out of gas between 10:30 and midnight. I'll watch him if I'm up.
I like Leno. He seems like somebody you wish you were friends with.

It's worth the effort to attend a live show but the last time I went was when Johnny Carson was still on TV & it was real exciting. The have a band & comics that entertain even before the show starts. Carson came up into the audience that night as part of his routine & your heart beat goes into orbit wondering if he is going to pick on you. Carson used to pick people & make fun of them [all in good spirit]. I once saw Don Rickles in Vegas & half his show was picking out people in the audience and bag on them unmercifully [esp Japanese guys with cameras
Anyway it's free but you have to get to the NBC studio several hours early & stand in line. There's another late night live show taped at the Roosevelt Hotel [can't remember the name since it comes on around 1AM

Yeah, you're right. I'll have to put it on my list of my last acts before leaving California. It's no secret that I want to move out of state.
Yeah, I had always figured that there was a fair amount of entertainment that wasn't broadcast, to get the audience in good spirits. The show would be dead without the audience laughter and applause. You know for sure that they don't keep the band going just to play 10 seconds here or there before commercials. I'm sure the band entertains the audience during all commercials.
I'll remember to go pi** in the Pacific Ocean one more time too.

I know its off-topic but make sure you get to at least one live show before you leave. Bill Maher's show is at the CBS studio\ 'Television City' on Beverly Blvd & the American Idol shows are televised on Melrose & the Nokia for their big shows. Lots of other taped shows but live is the most fun because it involves the audience so much.
Did Leno get the swine flu or is that a joke?
