Funny that the problems I have been screaming about for a long time are now being recognized by so many people. Not that I was the first. There were some other enlightened folks who could see through the drumbeat coming from the Sacramento Democrats and their friends in the media. Too bad it took such a fall on the part of California for some people to wake up. And doubly bad that a few still remain willfully ignorant.

And we see them on this board, cheering for more of what got us to this point to begin with.

Ok, well the decision to expand the government sector by politicians is, at the very least, self serving.
But I'm sure you won't agree.

I was born in SoCal. My wife was born in NorCal. In addition to both being natives, we're both military brats as well. I spent 12 years in the military and her first marriage was to an Airman. She's lived in one other country and four other states. I've lived in three other countries and seven other states.
We met at work where both of us were legislative analysts for the state. After working with various administrations and the Legislature for a congregate 37 years, we're both of the opinion that California is the most taxed, most lawed and most regulated state in the country and it's only getting worse. Add how it's too expensive as well and we're leaving to maximize our retirements.
Next month we fly to Missouri where there are three realtors in three different places all ready to show us homes. We've chosen MO because of the pace of life, its sense of history and tradition, the friendliness of the people, the beauty of the Ozarks and four distinct seasons. The costs of just about everything are far less than here. Coincidentally, English is also the predominant language and after California it will be like moving back to America. No more pressing one for English or selecting my language at an ATM. What balderdash.
To me it feels as if I'll be leaving a third-world country and returning home.

I live in MO and from what I've seen online you can purchase a BEAUTIFUL home here for the price of a little dumpy one room shack there.

FWIW: ( For What It's Worth ): We have several SoCal folks relocated/living near us in upscale areas of Ponce Inlet, Port Orange, New Smyrna and Spruce Creek ( exclusive gated community each house attached Hanger for aircraft ). John Travolta and other well off Californians (Kirkorian and Davis) are buying in a huge ritzy aircraft gated area about one hour inland from Daytona near Ocala. Tom Cruise is building a home there too. Cruise also invested south of Daytona Beach Shores ( Condo ). All of them seem happy about moving to sunny FLORIDA. Sure, we have some bugs and humidity but private schools here are very good and affordable, it's clean, safe and very green. The Beach is wider, sand is whiter and less crowds.
Last few years we've noticed quite a few Californians moving in and they all appear content and happy with their new life.
Good luck

Precisely! Water view and waterfront even. Acres. Square feet not priced in the many hundred$ each.
What's not to like? Mother Nature has always had some tricks up her sleeve but that's half the challenge; thus half the fun.

For the sake of accuracy, your area of California (Sacramento) is not priced at many hundred $ per square foot. The pricing for Sacramento County this past March was $113 per square foot. If you take a look at homes for sale in many other large metro areas across the country, you will find this is a fairly normal price range. Also, California tends to have lower property taxes than many other areas too.
If you want to compare your desired Ozark properties to stuff in California, you need to find similar areas. Using Sacramento as your baseline for lifestyle comparisons just isn't accurate. Instead, you really need to look at properties much further to the eastern side of California, or the far northern areas.

That's part of the fiscal problems the state has been experiencing since 1978, isn't it. For the record, houses we're looking at with views, water on property and/or waterfront, 1,350+ square feet and an acre or more of property have property tax bills in the $550-800 range.
That's per year, by the way!

Sacramento isn't my baseline. The state at large is as I've lived in SoCal, the central valley and NorCal. While they differ in some respects, there are certain fundamental similarities I find unattractive.
Similar areas? FDind me lake front property in CA for less than the near approach to $1 million, or beyond, for a small house on a postage stamp lot. In MO and the Ozarks I can find a relatively large house on an acre or more for well under $200K.
For the record, I don't have to do anything. I'm comparitively old, decidedly retired and extremely analytical. Thus my ultimate choice.

Tsk, tsk, so defensive.
What I'm suggesting is that doing a search on an area such as the stuff around Clear Lake provides a more accurate baseline of homes that comp with the Ozarks. Unlike your earlier posting, they don't base at hundreds of $ per square foot.
