I guess we're to assume you don't like it in CA too pretty much, right? Where were you, the desert?

Hey wait a second, that's where you went over the line!
We need more brown terrain (and fewer manicured lawns), more rattlesnakes, more coyotes and mountain lions (but with the restored right to hunt them, maybe even bounties), more tarantulas, black widows, and you forgot, scorpions. More tumble weeds, more old weathered fence posts, more head of cattle, more Lufkin field pumps, more horses and more barbed wire fences (but also, more places that don't need 'em). More rodeos, more 10 gallon hats, more no name cowboy boots, more beat up old pick ups. More cold beers after long dusty hard working days. More barbeques using beef grown within 10 miles. More rifles and revolvers (and fewer cheap, crappy plastic semi autos). More farms, orchards, barns, milking sheds, milking machines. More sheep shearers, more Basques, and more bull fighting rings. More combines and cotton harvesters, more high speed irrigation pumps, more canals and tiles.
Etc.

And a healthy portion of California about 30 years ago. But sadly, it's being pushed out of the way.

Ah, the memories. Born in San Diego in 1946 and raised for years in Newport Beach. I remember well how going to L.A. was a treat and an adventure in the 50s and 60s instead of a chore. Lunch at the Brown Derby was a really special occasion and not just the live entertainment but the Panorama Theater and Grauman's Chinese. We always felt safe and it was exciting.
Thanks to special guest passes we were at Disneyland the day it opened. It was a month before my 9th birthday. It was pure magic.
Christmas always encompassed special and wondrous displays put out by cities and towns commemorating the birth of Christ and I don't recall anyone's fragile psyche being irreparably damaged by it. By the same token I don't remember any vandalism of those various scenes or of individual house decorations. Graffiti was something you found in New York, not hometown America. Back in the day most people respected other's property rights and lets face it, even animals are smart enough not to foul their own nests.
So I wax nostalgic. I miss what this state used to be and despair that my children and grandchildren couldn't and won't have the same wondrous memories that came with simpler, more wholesome, patriotic times. As we prepare to move back to America I lament what I see as the coarsening and decline of our culture and of my state.

Similar story, but 1956, lived at Newport Beach & Huntington during the summer. We would camp at Doheney Easter break before the whole marina went in and ruined the coast in that area. Those are the things I miss but they can never come back. TX is our home now and we are still in the exploration stage. I am not sure where our next adventure will be if we move again, but it won't be CA. Sad but it is the reality, CA is not what it used to be and never will be again.
