Truckee or Tahoe City
Hey-
Long story short:
I'm 24 years old, female. I work as a substance abuse counselor. Looking to relocate to CA. In my new neighborhood I would like:
Nightlife (bars concerts etc)
outdoor activities (love the lake, hiking, etc)
large population of young people (my demographic)
low crime
I am cool with really cold weather but do like a season change.
Totally open to suggestions for places outside Truckee or Tahoe City. I am very open minded about the area. Just want to head west.
Thanks Much
S.

Truckee has a bit more too it than Tahoe City, plus it's more convenient to I-80. The minus is it's a bit north of the lake. Truckee is closest to Northstar, Squaw, Sugar Bowl, etc whereas Tahoe City (which is on the lake) is closest to Alpine, Incline and Rose. My pick personally would be Truckee, YMMV.

I was born in Truckee but haven't lived there for years but travel through it often.
Why CA? Just curious. I love California but if you're drawn to the west and don't need the ocean then you might want to consider other places outside of CA.
High end resorts anywhere west of the rockies will provide the outdoor activities that you're looking for and there are pretty progressive attitudes regarding substance abuse and recovery, etc., etc.
Telluride, CO for example (came to mind).
Nightlife, youth, Telluride Film Festival, beautiful, LA influence (for better or for worse) easy access, relatively progressive regarding environmental issues, etc.,
I'm fond of Truckee 'cause it's where i came into the world but it's over-run and i'm not sure it will provide you with what you're looking for.
Although, if you love the mountains the Sierra are wonderful and you'll be relatively close to the ocean.
The drive from Santa Cruz (where i am and a place you might want to consider as well although the season change is much more subtle than in the Sierra) to Truckee is less than 4 1/2 hours if you know how to avoid the traffic (all in the timing).
Good luck. West is best imo.

That's a tough call, but I'd say live in Tahoe City because you have the lake and the scenic beauty. Truckee has the night life, it gets pretty rowdy on the weekends, but you can always drive or cab there. BTW, both places are totally snowed and iced in for 6 months of the year. Are you ready to live in the snow and de-ice your car every morning? I live in Sacramento and we drive to Tahoe every few weeks in the winter to get our snow fix, but I would never want to live there full time. It's also quite expensive, almost San Francisco level, Truckee is a bit cheaper.

If you're in NY, you probably are familiar with digging out of snow, but yeah, do consider that will be a winter way of life in either place. Still, I know doctors who live in Truckee but commute east of Reno in the winter (meaning they have to and do get to work in the snow at odd hours regularly). Tahoe City is nice, but it is frustrating to navigate in summer due to tourists and campers - traffic will drive you crazy as a local. Truckee gets tourists too, of course, but not hanging over the bridge and clogging up main streets forever. Truckee has nightlife and is a tight little community - plus under half an hour to Reno to catch a headliner or get to the airport.

I would reccomend Truckee definatly, even though your 15 minutes to Tahoe, you have Donner Lake. Also Stampede, Prosser, and Boca Resevoir. There is a couple lakes towards Sierraville like Jackson Meadows, Independence Lake, Frog Lake, Lake of the woods. I live in Truckee and I love going to Lake Tahoe but I also have Donner lake if I just want to take a quick dip. Truckee also has more night life than Tahoe City, but its your call. I would choose Tahoe City if you want to be right on Tahoe.

I thought maybe it was minimum day at Truckee High, but it is still abit early for little darlings to be online.
Hey, Janey, are you aware that you are dredging up posts whose posters have long since departed the board, months or even years ago?
