In the Field Poll 2 weeks ago that is what 80% of those polled said too.

The Field Poll asked 901 Californians what taxes they thought the state could increase. The answers chosen by more than 1/2 of the respondents and the percentage of respondents who agreed:
Create a special tax on the sale of pornography 80%
Increase state tobacco taxes 75%
Increase state income taxes on individuals earning more than $1 million a year 74%
Increase state alcohol taxes 74%
Legalize marijuana for recreational use and tax its proceeds 56%
Create an oil severance tax on oil drilled in California 54%
Collect sales taxes from Californians who buy products from out-of-state sellers on the Internet 51%

In other words, sin taxes. Tax someone else. Of course if you tax things enough, people will have even more incentive to dodge the tax.

Exactly, basically people said tax the people who are not me and don't do the things that I do. Its everyone else who should pay according to those who were polled.

But I have a feeling that few Californians would say tax me more.

Heck in that poll only 40% of everyone polled said they were willing to pay higher taxes. 53% of those who said they were registered as Democrats said they were willing to pay more taxes.

I was referring to the pre 1991 Pravda, although you knew that.If the LA Times is considered moderate, then sure do not want to read the SFC.My local library carries the NY Times.Made an attempt to read it a couple of times.Unable to do so,will not try again.

CA's constitution forbids the state from declaring bankruptcy.

The only precedents I can think of:

1.The federal government took over DC when Marion Barry was mayor due to DC's financial crisis and totally inept government ; let's just say that was not pretty, although DC recovered. The feds turned control back to the DC government once Barry was no longer mayor.

2.NYC's bankruptcy in the mid 1970s ;didn't personally witness it, but there was a quick fix arranged that resulted in some nasty cuts, which led to crime going out of control and all public services falling apart.

Yet in both cases both DC and NYC came back within a few years, once there was a change in government.

Legalize and tax prostitution instead of increasing state alcohol taxes.

Perhaps ending the caps on alcohol licenses for bars and restaurants such as anyone could be able to buy them would also raise money.

I have my doubts about increasing state income taxes or collecting sales taxes on products bought over the Net, and am opposed to increasing alcohol and tobacco taxes, but I'm OK with the rest.

Like libraries? I can use the library at any JC in the area for free any time I want. I can't check out a book but why would I with so many on line libraries now.

There are so many programs that need the axe, they can start by rescinding them in order of seniority by when they were started all the way back to the mid 90s. chop chop.

A lot of those are regressive taxes and affect the least able to absorb the tax the most. Studies have shown revenue quickly falls off as people modify behavior or find work arounds.

Union concessions and cuts are the way out of this mess.
