The variety of things to see and do here, you never have to go very far to be in a radically different environment (city and country). The scenery is remarkable, and the people friendly.

The weather cannot be beat. That seems like a small thing but it's not. It's huge. I never wear hose or socks. A sweater will do you most of the winter. The sun shines and shines and shines. But, except for the desert, it's not hot like AZ or FLA or TX.
Lots of jobs, business opportunities. A variety of neighborhoods and landscapes.
With lots of people come lots of shops and restaurants - anything you could ever want. Diverse. Middle America. All mixed together.
That said, cashing out and leaving is very attractive (especially for us middle aged and older folks) because you can take your California "winnings" and buy a bigger home and land elsewhere.

We are moving back (I've been in Seattle for 3 years)
I've lived all over CALIF
But I loved Sacramento
I adored the weather and would rather endure the balzing heat in August (for one month) then being cold 10 months of the year like Seattle
We left because of the latin invasion (it's really out of control) and the schools are bad...

Love Cal.
The weather is the best. I've lived in several places from Maine to 'nam, and the beaches here are where I'll die.
I love the variety in Cal. I drive up to Napa/Sonoma several times a year. That's where all of my family is at, and 100s of wineries to visit.
I can drive to Big Bear for snow skiing, and that evening I'm back home where I'm barefooted on or very near the beach much of the time. Love walking or running on the beach at low tide. Anyplace I can run around barefoot for a major portion of the year is for me. I've lived in severe hot weather and very high humidity, life is too short for that kind of sillyness.
L.A. etc. is very close and all of its variety of restaurants and sights to see. But I'm always back home at the end of the day.
I've driven coast to coast 4 times, by the south, north, and across the middle. Its one hell of a back yard, but I love California.

Best in the world
Once upon a time a group of risk takers left Europe and founded the United States which is clearly the most awesome and amazing country in the world. Then a sub group of that population decided to travel west in search of gold - the risk takers of the risk takers. They left the conservatives in NY and ended up here in the greatest state in the greatest state in the world - California. Why is CA the best state in the nation? San Francisco, Hollywood, San Diego. Google, Yahoo, MySpace. Agriculture, wine, food. According to The World Factbook published by the CIA, if California were an independent nation, it would have had the tenth largest economy in the world in 2005. If you want to live an incredible life, like the lives you see on TV, come to California and you will not be disappointed. I came here in 2000 totally broke and now I'm a millionaire. The gold rush hasn't ended yet - come get yours. While everyone on the east coast is shoveling snow, you'll be sunny and 70. While people are trying to find $0.99 to buy that value menu item, you'll be on the fifth floor. When they decided to just pay off that Mazda, you'll be wondering if a Ferrari and a Bentley will work for you. Your life is what you say it is. Here in California, the energy vibration is all about possibility - just like in the gold rush. When you live here, you get infected with that energy and you become it. Come and let yourself be infected. Life is meant to be bountiful and beautiful and it's here. Skateboard pros, surf pros, motorcross pros. Come. Enjoy. Love.

Location - eastern suburbs of Sacramento.
Why live in one state or one country when you can have the whole world right here in California?
The word diverse really means California. No place like it on earth.

Sounds to me like you must live near Santa Barbara or in the general area? I lived in Pt Hueneme/Oxnard for a couple of years.
My liking Calif so much is its my home. I was born and raised out there and though have lived several places since leaving there, none of those places can take the place of where you grew up, unless youre like me and love the midwest too.
People try to discourage my desire to go back by talking about quakes, but the harder they try, the more it pushes. So what, Calif has quakes. Everywhere you go, there will be issues of some sort. It hasnt disappeared into the ocean after everyone has been saying its going to for almost a century now, but Im not going to get into that...
I love the climate in some areas and nothing comes close to having 4 actual seasons.

What I love of California is mostly the Pacific coast. I grew up in a family of commercial fishermen, and spent more than a few Christmas vacations as a kid on swordfish trips. As I got older, everyone figured out I could cook, and so I spent more time below deck making flapjacks or bonito salad sandwiches. They used to tease me because I'd eat the bait (the squid, cooked of course)
I love the deep, blue/green color of the Pacific here. It is mesmerizing and beautiful. It is comforting to look at, it gives me a peaceful feeling.
The smell of the ocean, diving the cold water of Catalina Island, coming across some fat, 7-lb Calico bass staring at me completely unafraid.
Sitting on the beach in the winter, watching gulls circle, that sharp, salt air.
Morro rock, admiring the skill of those boat captains as they maneuver in and out of Morro Bay. I don't fear many things in life, but that looks intimidating.
The Golden Gate bridge. better to be a passenger in the car so you can safely watch below. Or better yet, be on a boat going under it. Pictures do *not* do it justice. It is a marvel of architecture.
Traveling up highway 1, anywhere in the northern half of the state, stopping in any harbor, talking to fishermen. What are they catching, how's the water, and so on.
