Default Governor proposes $5.5 Billion in cuts to welfare, healthcare, prisons, higher ed, parks

The Governor today made a new proposal of an additional $5.5 billion in budget cuts to a variety of programs. The proposal now goes to the legislature.

Among the cuts proposed:
  • Eliminate the CalWORKS welfare program which pays roughly $525 per month to 521,000 families.
  • Drop health care coverage for 1 million children under the Healthy Families program.
  • Reduce Medi-Cal coverage.
  • Eliminate non-emergency medical treatment for illegal immigrants.
  • Cut vocational and educational programs in the prisons.
  • Release non-violent offenders 1 year early.
  • Eliminate new CalGrants for college students.
  • Reduce CalGrant amounts for those already in the program.
  • Cuts to both the UC and CSU system budgets.
  • Cut state park funding in 1/2 this year and remove all state general fund money next year to the state parks. They would then operate on fees collected at the parks.
The full list of new proposed cuts and brief explanations of each is at:
http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs...Conference.xls

Today's proposal did not make cuts to K-12 education, although there is no guarantee that it might not be part of a later proposal.

I thought 187 was about emergency healthcare and public schools.

Does this mean the welfare slugs are fleeing to Nevada and Oregon so they can be supported by other states?

Wouldn't that be nice. Instead, they'll march in the streets and demand "their" money, the LA Times and TV news will run sob stories night after night, and our taxes will be raised to keep the gravy train on track.

Nothing in there about any sort of elimination of redundancy or serious structural reform. Scaremongering. The end game? But of course, overturning Prop 13 and increased income taxes.
