Music Career
My fiance and I are trying to move to a city where both of our music styles are accepted: Metal (him) and Pop/Rock & R&B (me). Is there a city in Cali that is influenced by both or with surrounding cities?
Thanks in advance!

What type of music 'career' are you looking for? Production, Sound Engineering, mix board, studio musician, start a band?? I was a mix board operator/sound engineer for a while and let me tell you, musicians are a dime a dozen in California. And most are REALLY GOOD.
Also, when you say metal, do you mean hair metal, screamo metal, no musical talent metal etc.? Pop/Rock R&B is basically on genre at this point, as most musical styles have melded to the point that you can't tell them apart.
I'm little jaded by the music 'industry' at this point (which is why I play acoustic bluegrass now ) but any area with more than 25,000 people are going to have representations of the genres you like. Pretty much all towns have a few recording studios tucked away somewhere. My old town had 3 of them with a populations of less than 30,000.

The U.S. record industry's major labels don't sign metal acts (Emo, yes, but that isn't really metal) right now. You pretty much have to go to Europe, especially Scandinavia or Germany, for that.
Straight pop has more of a chance.
Good luck. But rock is pretty much dead in America.

Come visit Austin in the spring during South by Southwest (SXSW). From what I hear it isn't easy to make a living as a musician anywhere - but Austin has just about everything music wise except hard-core urban styles. Not much real jazz either.

so cal is saturated with "musicians" you might want to consider different city.
i havn't been out of state much, but im sure you can find one that's music friendly, that has lots of places to play (get paid, albeit, not much), and lower cost housing.

Really? I live in Sweden and sure, there are some good rock bands here but 90 % of the music I listen to is from the states.
Bands like The Killers, Kings of Leon and MGMT are new american bands that are huge, and most of the indie/folk rock I listen to is from the US.

Rock must be dead to you because you don't like it but I agree with uncut.... and plus I said pop/rock as far as I know Kelly Clarkson is doing pretty good as well as my other influences.
