Maybe I should leave it at that as well. Before I retired at the end of last year I should have asked who among the state worker denigrators and haters wanted me to ensure that forensic mental health commitments were released into their neighborhoods. Those would be the sexually violent predators, incompetent to stand trial, not guilty by reason of insanity and mentally disordered offenders.

Belly up to the bar you folks who have nothing better to do than belittle and insult state workers. Volunteer your neighborhood. In fact, open your house to them.

I'm waiting!

Sir, thank you for electing yourself as the voice of California. Just want to remind you of something - GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES ARE ALSO TAXPAYERS.

I give a lot more money to the state government than I get. Can you say the same?

My point is that people seem to imply that checks cut to state workers don't have taxes removed.

I'm certainly not of the mind set that this is an efficient state, however, I do enjoy paved roads and am content with paying taxes that support school districts for your kids, as I have none.

I do have a solution. You can stop paying taxes and go to jail. Then you could get more bang for your buck - shelter, food, etc.

I’m a physician and my employer is California. I guess that makes me part of the “lazy” bunch that should thank each and every citizen on a daily basis for paying my salary. Well, first, you can call me lazy after you graduate medical school. Second, although my salary is a joke, I’d be glad to refund the minor contribution you have made to my salary. I am certain the stamp will be worth more then the contents when I return it to you. Just please post your last tax return so I know how much to send. Let me just check on one more thing. Are you for cutting letter carriers? I know it is federal, but I wouldn’t want you to contradict yourself.

Yes, I “serve” the community. In fact I passed on a nice cushy practice in LA and chose to work in an environment housing people that society, in some form or another, has voted too dangerous to live amongst them. In other words, I spend much of my week with these folks so many of you can forget to lock your car doors or let your children play at the park.

So you, the taxpayer (AS IF I’M NOT), want me to continue showing up at work for what will amount to a 15% pay cut? Truth is, my meager salary barely covers my student loans.

Now, someone will certainly be of the mindset to say that these people which I serve should not be afforded the care I provide. Maybe some will go as far as to suggest that my job should be cut. I will save you the trouble. I plan to resign early next month and will have to suffer the ills of a 300% to 400% salary increase. I will get over it J

I also offer medical services to mental health and developmentally disabled clients, but as an independent contractor. Last year when the legislators were delaying the budget the State did not pay me for FOUR months. Obviously for ethical reasons I did not suspend services. However, my cash flow was severely disrupted, and I had to take out a loan to pay my Sept 15th estimated taxes. It doesn't matter if you are a State employee or a sole proprietorship small business. Providing services to the State of California is difficult and frustrating. Unless the voters fire the legislators, fewer people are going to be willing to work for the State.

Hey, I'm glad you showed up!! Actually, you are part of the problem. You guys are ripping off taxpayers. Why don't you tell the people what you bill them per hour and then I'll we can compare this with my salary for doing the same job. FOLKS, these contractors are charging absurd rates and we foot the bill!!!!!

Just wait to see if they will post the hourly rate they bill...

Yes they are taxpayers. But the problem is that state employees are taxpayers that don't contribute to the growth of the economy. You may pay taxes but where did the income originate? The state does not make money, it spends money. We have a need for services in the state. That is very true. It is somewhat hard to have a DMV, Highway Patrol, Prison system that is not part of the government. Their is a movement to build private prisons though. Some people thinh that private industry can do the job more efficiently than government run institutions. As far as a comment that I made in a former post within this thread that state government payrolls should be slashed by 50%, that is in reference to a story that I read where the state employees have doubled in size within the last 10 years. I don't have the story and have only heard it on the radio. Maybe someone would have more knowledge of how much the size of the government has grown.

$94.50/hour.

You get vacation pay. I don't.
You get sick leave. I don't.
You get healthcare coverage. I don't.
You get most, if not all of your malpractice insurance covered. I pay for mine out of my pocket.
You get an inflated retirement pension compared to private industry.
I pay DOUBLE the social security you do since I pay both the employer and employee share.
State, federal, and self-employment tax take 62%, or $58.59/hour of my billable rate BEFORE expenses.
I pay all expenses to render services, including phone, internet, computer, etc. When my computer system breaks down, I pay for it out of my business. You run to the IT department.

All of the above comes out of my billable rate, plus I take the risk of bidding contracts. I get fired every year or two when the contract ends and I have to rebid my job. You take zero risk and have to be a moron or have a gross malpractice suit to be terminated.

Anytime you want to get out here in the real world and compete, be my guest. Try to run your own office instead of hiding as an employee. Until then quit whining about how State employed physicians have it so hard.

SPB Expresses Concern Over Outsourcing at Atascadero State Hospital - AFSCME Privatization Update

1. You are either lying or a very bad business person. You claim to charge a rate which is less than half that of other contractors. Truth is that contractors are billing $200 - $300 per hour. Some bill 60+ hours per week for a 40 hour job. That rate is well above double our salary.

2. If being a State employee was so much better, why are you a contractor? More so, why renew your contract?
