The link below has the weather averages for Redding. The average high there is 98 in July, 97 in August. If you look at the forecast, you'll notice the highs are supposed to be above 105 for the next several days.

Redding is surprisingly hot for an area so far north. That's because it is on the south side of a very tall mountain (Mt. Shasta). Being on the south side of a mountain, and inland from the coast, it heats up even more than other Central Valley towns much farther to the south (like Fresno and Bakersfield).

The positive side of this is that its average winter temperatures are also warmer than one would expect for an area this far north. Average highs/lows in January for Redding are 55/36. For Fresno it's 54/38, even though it's in the same valley, 500 miles to the south.

It is a climate most appreciated in spring and fall.
Yes, that's true. Winter temperatures are mild for a place so far north, but it does rain a lot.

ShastaLiving is on a distinguished road
We just had the best May and June EVER...weather was almost perfect (75-80 degrees). Then of course July hits and it's a different story. We have had consecutive triple digit temps and then it comes back down to high 90's. That's typical of July and even August. As locals, we run to the lakes, rivers and nearby town with higher elevation, like Mt. Shasta, Shingletown and Burney. We like taking extended weekend trips to Ashland, Oregon (a real trendy town with lots to do) - or head to the coast, Eureka or Mendocino (approx. three hours West of Redding). You really get use it pretty quickly, and enjoy the other 10 months!

Best wishes to you.
Chris & Maria
