Default Road trip: Need your top 5 fun places to visit in Northern CA

ROAD TRIP...Please Help: I need to know the Top 5 fun places to visit in Northern CA. We will be traveling by car and have three kids, ages 11, 8, and 6. Might be bringing the dog too.

Any good ideas of the "must sees". We love all types of things indoor and outdoor, nature, adventure, etc..... Plan to travel, end of July - beginning of August. We are starting from CA and trying to see parts of NV, UT, ID, MT and Northern CA.

And yes, I know it's crazy! hee hee
Thank you!

That covers it, I would expand #1 to include a day for each: Napa Valley and Muir Beach.

Default Thank you 18Montclair

Ah ha, Santa Cruz is on my list!

What is your favorite lake up that way?

What should we do in China town?

We come from the San Diego area (lots of aquarium type things here), the aquarium in Monterey, still worth while stop?

Any good sugestions on places to stay in Tahoe and Yosemite? We plan to camp two nights, hotel next night type thing.....

If we wanted to see the best "rugged rocky coast line" that we could actually get down on to the beach, where would that be?

Thanks so much for your input!!!

For kids, don't miss these places:

1) Home: Bay Area Discovery Museum - baykidsmuseum.org
2) Exploratorium: the museum of science, art and human perception
3) Coyote Point Museum | Museum for Environmental Education

There is a nice Redwood tree drive along Skyline hwy 35 from San Francisco, stop and see "Methuselah".

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is quite a bit bigger than Scripps down in SD.
Regarding beaches, there are a number of very nice ones with rugged coastline in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties. Garrapata and Pfeiffer State Beaches are worth a stop. Free parking to be had at Greyhound Rock further up the road past Santa Cruz.

OK, let me add Carmel Beach, simply because you don't often see sand that white in CA. Also, Carmel is probably the "dog friendliest" town in the country, so it will be a nice stop for your pet.

The aquarium in Monterey is great but do see Big Sur!!!
Have lunch at Nepethe's or Cafe Kivah (the outdoor cafe which is part of Nepenthe's but a bit more fun and kid friendly).
It's a beautiful way to have some refreshments and get a feel for the beauty and magic of Big Sur.
If you've got the energy for it, visit the boardwalk in Santa Cruz ... great fun for kids ... rides, (the ferris wheel a fun way to view Monterey Bay).
Happy Trails.
