NY Times article: "Slump Dashes Oregon Dreams of Californians"
Interesting article about Californians who left for Oregon and now find the economy bad there. It focuses on the Bend area which was popular for transplants during the housing boom
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/18/us/18oregon.html
The article provides a good warning about moving without first finding a job, moving without first doing research, and moving expecting to live on savings and investments.
This quote particularly reminded me of the previous migrations out of California. But it can also apply to moving TO California also.
"“California immigrants can never win in Oregon,” said Philip J. Romero, an economist who has advised governors in both states. “In a boom, ‘They are crowding the roads and bidding up house prices.’ In a bust, it’s: ‘They alone caused the price of my house to drop by hundreds of thousands of dollars. They came up here without a job, and now we can’t absorb them and they’re competing for my job.’ ”"

Very interesting article. Especially the part where Californians get blamed for either the economic boom or downfall.
I've known a lot of people move to other places and do just fine. But in this market I would not move anywhere without a job first. There are some people who have moved with a "good" job and the job disappeared when they got there because the company had financial problems.

I'm tired of people blaming californians.
I have no doubt that many of those so called californians are only using calif as a stepping stone. Many of them probably originated from some other state.
And lets face it, if all the transplants in calif that came from other states would leave then calif would not have traffic, pollution, crime, budget problems.

Benny you are so right! Most of the people I meet now a days aren't from here. It is rare that I find people born and raised in CA.

I'm moving to Wyoming at the end of the summer. Until I get my plates changed people will think I am a califorinian. But I was born and raised in Arizona and lived in Colorado, NY city, washington DC, los angeles and palo alto.

Looking at the unemployment numbers coming in this week from other states, I agree.
California's May unemployment number comes out Friday, I expect it will be little changed from April's 11.0%. My guess is that seasonal hiring in ag, tourism and construction may help offset new job losses in California.
But we will see in the morning if that was enough to balance the unemployment numbers in California.
A couple of neighboring states' unemployment is already in:
Oregon (12.4% in May up from 11.8 in April)

Nevada (11.3% in May up from 10.6% in April)

That's right!
They are not real Californians. Just transplants and immigrants. They didn't just pop up out of the ground. Your government brought them here for all of us to love and enjoy! So enjoy!

Fresnofacts, from what I hear from people getting unemployment I'm not sure how the state of CA even knows what the true unemployment number is. People are not able to process their claims nor talk to live people at the unemployment offices. People I know have processed their claims months ago and yet to see a dime. I don't believe a thing CA has to report.

Funny, here in Denver there is still a chilly feeling towards Californians for some the same reasons mentioned in the article. And even more funny, I actually worked with a guy back in NorCal who moved to Bend a few years back to live off of some savings and run a small internet business... Small world I guess.

the bunch that came here during the dot com boom was insufferable and so incredibly materialistic.
Not the web designers or developers, but those on the business side. Im so glad they left when the dot com thing busted.
Good Riddance.
