Unhappy Trouble renting in Bakersfield w/ 1 child

I am relocating to Bakersfield for graduate (masters) study at CSUB this fall and have hit a wall on my rental search. I have good rental history (currently rent my own place) and would have to drive over 3 1/2 hour round trip to get to school daily if I dont move.

I did find some places willing to rent to me on my financial aid income (loans) that will cover all my costs as I have been, but the issue is that I found they were not in a good or even half way good neighboorhood and school unsafe to be alone for couple hours.

I have even called the low income places but wont accept our cat. We are quiet church going family & not sure what other options are available.

I was thinking about Delano and renting from private owner. Have even thought about renting a room and sending child w/ relatives.

Any advice or sugguestions are appreciated. I cant delay admission to the program and must be there before Sept 1st.
