One of the benefits of diversity is that we get many more holidays to enjoy -- from Chinese New Year to Cinco de Mayo (and many more, I'll keep this list short).

We also get wonderful cuisines and exotic foods we might never have found on our own.

Funny you say that since the OP complains that Stockton is not diverse (ie it's overwhelmingly Latino). So which one is it: is Stockton diverse or is it not?

Stockton is one of the most diverse cities in the entire country. All you need to do is check its C-D page:

Races in Stockton:

* Hispanic (32.5%)
* White Non-Hispanic (32.2%)
* Other race (17.3%)
* Black (11.2%)
* Other Asian (7.9%)
* Two or more races (6.8%)
* Filipino (6.2%)
* American Indian (2.3%)
* Vietnamese (2.2%)
* Chinese (1.8%)
* Asian Indian (0.9%)
* Japanese (0.6%)

There are Mexican/Mexican-Americans in Stockton because it is in the middle of an agricultural area. Long before you were born, there used to be these things called farms in/around Stockton. These areas are now covered by relatively new housing tracts. Well, people from Mexico would come up and work in the farms, picking crops and such. They would settle down and start families near the farms they would work in, like in Stockton. Mexicans still come to CA to work in the farms, or just to work in general.

Fast fact: At one time (before 1846), California used to be part of Mexico. Bet you didn't know that.

What's the ratio of Illegal to Legal immigrants in Stockton? Anyone know?

Why does it exist? Does it exist solely to make other places "look good"? Is Stockton's role to serve as a reminder that one inhabits a better place than somewhere else?
Next time you're unhappy about where you live, remember the line, "Hey, it's a $#!^hole to be sure, but it ain't STOCKTON, for God's sake!"
There! Happy if I made someone's day better.

Let it be clear, no where in my original post did I voice my stance on diversity. I personally think that both diverse and non-diverse areas can work well.

According to the 2000 census, 15.5% of all Stocktonians claim to be non-citizens. Granted, some of that percentage will include people on work visas, but you all can draw your own conclusions from that number. That number is much higher than I expected, but for arguments' sake, even if all Hispanics in Stockton's race/ethnicity list were non-citizens, that would still leave a 17% Hispanic population.

I believe the percentage for all of California is about 15.5% also. So you should not be surprised about the number for Stockton.

It was surrendered by force. Even the two-term president, General of the Army and Civil-war hero Ulysses S Grant said, "The Mexican war was the most unjust war ever waged by a strong nation against a weak nation."

I misspoke here, even if all non-citizens were Hispanic, that would still leave a 17% Hispanic population.
