Drake's voyage was in 1579. Cortez conquered Mexico in 1521.

Cabrillo (a Portuguese sailing for Spain) landed in San Diego Bay in 1542 and claimed it for Spain.

So Drake was a late arrival in California.

It was surrendered? Then why the hell did we purchase it in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo? I want a refund.

What percentage would be Spaniards, like the people who were here when it was part of Mexico, and what percentage would be Mestizo, as in people who were not present when it was part of Mexico?

It's hard to know something that isn't true.

FresnoFacts already corrected you, as Cabrillo had Drake beat by 37 years (see: the statue of Cabrillo at Point Loma in San Diego).

The CA school system taught us CA history in 4th grade, it was actually quite intensive.

2000 census, 0.7 percent of Stocktonians claim Spaniard, Spanish or Spanish American background. 3.3 percent claims "Not elsewhere classified" as their type of Hispanic background. 27.4 percent claim Mexican. It is unknown how many would consider themselves Mestizo, since that is something that is not tallied. Not to mention, some Mexicans wouldn't even consider themselves Mestizo.

So the answer to your question is really unknown. I would say that at least half are first or second-generation immigrants, and then split the smaller half between multi-generational immigrants and multi-generational Californians. Maybe something like 60/30/10. But, I'm just speculating here, and don't claim to know for sure.

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was supposed to protect the land and property rights of the Mexican residents the same way the Mexican law had protected them before the US take over, that never happened. The treaty would have also made the Mexican residents automatic US citizens, but that didn't happen either not until a about hundred years later. The US government never had any intention of enforcing the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

The Chinese were here first. Way before any Europeans.

It isn't mostly Mexicans. You obviously know nothing about the city, as there are huge populations of Asians and African Americans and whites, except for on the South side which is mostly black. Of course most of the gang problem is due to Hispanics and that crime coming from Mexico and other parts of Latin America. Stockton looks like any other valley town.
