what are you looking for in terms of both culture and natural environment?
i didn't read the whole thread so maybe you've already answered this.

I know it seems some members are being a bit hard on you. But honestly, they are just being realistic. You may be able to get a job as a Substitute Teacher - but even those jobs are hard to come by now and most districts have a hiring freeze. I know that because I am a teacher. I think your best bet may be to save up enough money to live off of for 6 months. Because like another member said, it may take you 6 months just to GET a job. And if you tell them you only want to work for that length of time, odds are they won't even go through the trouble of looking at your application.
The only other job besides subbing that I can think of is background acting in LA which pays minimum wage. And even waitressing jobs are hard to come by. Unless you know someone who owns a restaurant, or you don't mind working at Denny's or IHOPS. But honestly, I think even Denny's or IHOPS may be hard to get into. But then there's always the people on the corners who wave the street signs for a living - I hear they pay $10/hour.

Things like good places to live, how to go about finding jobs (possibly before I leave New Zealand), and how to find a place to live, would be great to find out.
I am an educated person with a good work ethic looking to find a job, not a drop out with no work skills, and not much of an interest in working. I'm sure there is a job to be found, even if it is something like waitressing.

Where would be a good area to live that is warm, in close proximity to a beach, reasonable rent, and busy (with things to do)?
I have a teaching degree and my boyfriend is a qualified machining engineer, will finding jobs be difficult.
Oh yeah, we are moving from little old New Zealand, a very safe country, with a population of around 4million, so this is very daunting.
Any help would be appreciated.

Please DONT move here. We don't need another transplant.
I have a teaching degree also. LA unified just laid off 3,000 teachers this year, including myself.
New Zealand is beautiful. What are you thinking?
Perhaps you are in LA LA land.. which is perfect for Los Angeles. Another transplant.
Hope you have a car to bring over, oh and learn to speak Spanish fast!
Carry pepper spray and a stun gun everywhere.
I was born here and have been attacked 4 times in my life... and robbed.
Please, please don't move here, seriously....
There are NO teaching jobs. and we HATE transplants....
Hope you have about 500,000 to buy a house.. oh yea that's right.. nobody will give out loans here..so you have to rent at 2,000 a month for a small 2 bedroom apartment.
Practive this " may i take your order " " do you want fries with that " " do you want to supersize your meal" --- Because you will be LUCKY if you get a fast food job.
I'm in the unemployment line with teachers, administrators... people with Masters in Business Admin...
Don't move here... I beg of you

WOW! I've just come to the realisation that Americans are VERY rude and uncaring!
There is no way I'll be moving there after reading half the crap you guys have written!!!!!

Yes New Zealand is beautiful and amazing, and unlike my experience with Americans New Zealanders are so very helpful! Whenever I meet a tourist or immigrant from another country I am kind, and interested in them. I would never say anything like.... we HATE transplants, how f***en rude.
The reason for leaving New Zealand is to experience the world and see new things so I am not as ignorant as people like you!
God this site has made me proud to be a New Zealander!

I was looking for a warm climate, near a beach. Culturally I didn't mind what I experienced, just wanted to see how others live in the world.
Thanks anyway we have decided now that America is probably one of the last places we want to live. Now looking into Spain, warm climate, beaches, and NICE people (something in my experience that America seems to be lacking)
