If you can work around the oil industry you might be able to find a job in the area.
Bakersfield is currently forecast to be the first area in California to fully recover from the recession, mainly due to the oil industry.
But the full recovery there is still not going to happen until late 2011.

If Bakersfield works for you then food and beverage plants make sense also.
The Bakersfield area has lots of food plants, (Frito-Lay, Dreyer's Ice Cream, Grimmway, Bolthouse, etc).
I have a family member who is a machinist with a maintenance background in Northern California. He has found his skills transfer to different industries.

Your skills will help you land a job in the food or oil industry, right now the oil side is still slow, there are always jobs in the paper for nurse positions.
i wouldn't worry about the ozone or smog or whatever but it does get HOT, this week it has been up to 108 and holdong in the 100 range.

On a light note, buy some Buck Owens albums before you move to Bakersfield, he used to run that town!

Don't forget Merle Haggard. He may be best known for "Okie from Muskogee" but he is Bakersfield born and raised.
You can now drive both Buck Owens Blvd and Merle Haggard Drive in Bakersfield and Oildale.
