Been my dream forever, but all the negativity on the CA forums has been pretty successful at keeping me from moving there. If it's a scare tactic, it has worked.
*prepares for another brutal winter as his dream slips further and further...*
The key is that life in California is not perfect. Many people expect California to be perfect then get disillusioned when they discover otherwise.
But I don't think anywhere is perfect. I've been enough places in the US to learn that the hype doesn't match the reality of life anywhere. There are always the negatives that people don't tell you about.
You have to decide what positives you value highly and what negatives you can live with. Then research to match those with where you want to live. Its all about tradeoffs.
If someone wants to move to California and expects to live within a block of the beach, forget it most of us can't afford it or if we have we eventually realized its not that big a deal.
It can even be a real pain for beach locals to deal with tourists cramming the beach or visitors looking for parking in residential neighborhoods.
The largest number of tourists to Hawaii is from California. Why is that if Californians get to go to the beach all the time or enjoy great beach weather already? Maybe its because we have to go on vacation to enjoy those things. Day to day life doesn't allow us to appreciate them.
Or people want to come to California and expect to be discovered as an actor or model or musician. Sorry it isn't going to happen, otherwise all Californians would have SAG cards.
Can you create a good life in California, absolutely. Just remember it is real life not a movie. Some days its great, other days you wonder why you put up with it.
For many of us it all evens out or even leans to the good side. When it does, it beats living anywhere else.
The current financial situation for the state of California makes me sad I lived in the Napa Valley for a year, moved to Oregon, but always hope to relocate back to California some day.
Californians...... do you feel any hope for the future of your state? or should I give up my dream ?
Why in the world would want to move back into california?? The california dream went down the toilet years ago and getting deeper all the time.
Truthfully, Coney, I think day-to-day-life in California is probably like day-to-day-life where you are or most anywhere else in the US. When the economy and politics are on more solid ground, we have less things to intrude into our worry zone. But for the most part, we just live our lives, albeit probably tightening our belts a little more during this time. The pendulum swings and in the not too distant future, I think it will swing back to a more optimistic place.
If California has appealed to you in the past, it likely will again in the present and the future. If one goes by the headlines and the doomsayers ( the glass half-empty instead of half-full), it would be easy to be frightened off. You don't have to jump this minute. Give it a little time. Then come on back when it starts to feel right. California isn't immune to the economic and political ills that come and go but it's still a fine place to live if you choose the right area. There are lots of people living good lives here everyday! We're not unaffected by what's going on in the big picture but life goes on here just like everywhere else and not in a bad way.
All are welcome here, so come on down. I don't see the bad times lasting forever in California, even Ahnold has weighed in and said California has a lot to offer.

don't forget about commercials (well, one of them).
I have always loved this Mamas and Papas California Classic song. What a great 60s band who were only really together for a brief time. I researched the origin of the song online. And it turns out it was inspired and written while the group was in New York walking around in the snow.
Grow where your roots are, if that is California, then come back - do somthing productive - - - Help out at a Soup Kitchen, Gather clothing for a church to give out. . . This side of the fence - that side of the fence - - whichever side you decide to get on, just get ready to the "stuff" that you need to "spread" to keep that grass greener
Whatever side of the fence you go to. . . Just get off the fence & get ready to get dirty . . . Hard work ( by everyone ) is what will get us back on the road to recovery. . .
There has been TOO MANY sitting on the fence, watching those who are along for the ride - - - The parade is over & it is the time for everyone to get back to work - working to pick ourselves back up & dust ourselves off - - Life in California has been a day at the beach & they were feeling rich, because their houses were going through the roofs. . . Everyone was SO HAPPY, getting something for nothing
Well houses are getting back to a saner priceing structure - yeah, the house that you bought for $450k, was up to $800k & now it's down to $375k - - and you cry that you lost all that money. . . ! ! !
It was only on paper - or a dream, if you didn't sell at the perfect time ( and then what would have bought ) DON"T you get it. . .
You bought TOO MUCH of a house - in a attemp to get rich. . Everyone was doing that - - -How long did you think that you would be able to get something for nothing ? ? ? No one was really " working" that hard, so the loss of a DREAMED value of your house, is just that . . .a loss of a dream - - hard work - - either by you, or your employees is that fastest way we will get back on track. . .
Come to California to DO SOMETHING - work at it & work for it
OR just stay on the fence & watch the parade fade from your sight
Native California & tired of people that want to use the State & the System to get ahead. . . Willing to DO SOMETHING = WELCOME,
otherwise that bubble has popped & it is time for clean-up. . .
Ready to lend a hand ? Great - - Just remember, Hand-outs are over

Never give up on a dream. You may find it's only a dream and nothing more, but at least you will have tried to achieve it and that's what counts!
