Moving with No Job
Someone please explain the rationale behind why people continue to move around the 50 states with no jobs first....Correct me if I am wrong, but arent you supposed to have the job in hand before making the big leap....

Yeah I don't understand that logic either... I just hope they've got a lot of money saved up and some good luck on their side.

Some people are young, or have money saved up and some just think they will have it better elsewhere. I don't blame people in Detroit for instance who probably can't get a job to save their life and move where ever they think there are jobs.
There have been times when I moved and had no job lined up and things turned out very well (was younger than and the economy was in better shape), my last move was just a disaster as the economy changed. In this current economy I WOULD NEVER MOVE without a job though. NEVER!

My uncle just did this. He was laid off from a job, then moved to Texas to a city where there is nothing for him. He does have a lot of money, and the cost of living is cheaper where he moved. I still don't get it. I would not move without having a job first.

I can see why people who are unemployed somewhere like San Francisco or NYC woudl move elsewhere without a job (wouldn't leave a job in-hand now, though, at least not without a huge cushion of money I was willing to burn through), as at least while trying to find work they would be able to trim their expenses significantly. But in general I think it's a bad idea at this point in time. I also get it when people are young, don't have a job, and are willing to live dirt-cheap while trying to find work, but it's the people who give up jobs and who have kids (and don't have huge savings) who I really don't understand. I'm guessing that many people just don't really believe how hard it can be to find a job right now.

I think people know its hard, but think that they will be the exception. Haven't we all done this some time in our lives? We think it won't happen to us. But if this recession does anything, it will remind us that we can all be affected. And maybe teach us a thing or two about survival.

As far as I am concerned you are. It is unbelievable to me, anyone other than maybe migrant workers or something like that would even consider relocatiing without a job..

Its a catch-22 in some ways though... and in this sense I can see why some would move without a job.
These days especially, many places are limiting long distance hiring. Its expensive, they have to pay for the interview trip, moving expenses, etc etc. Costs add up quick, and it saves companies money to hire people closeby. So if these guys are in areas where business has collapsed, it might behove them to move to an area where there is hiring going on, or where growth is taking place. The only downside being that its somewhat of a gamble and they could be in dire straits if they aren't very regimented with their finances.
I have nothing against it really... assuming your single with a decent bit of cash saved away to fall back on. I'd recommend finding a friend or family member in the area in case things go south though.

“The problem with the youth of today is that one is no longer part of it”.
Being young, single, no kids and having family to bail you out...not a problem moving without a job.
Anything other than that, is really stupid.
