This is yet another sad example of what is happening to a once great state..

I mean as if closing the State Parks was not eye opening enough..then something like this emerges..

And i was born here.. Glad to soon be leaving.. I pray other states don't follow California's un-example.. just gotta shake your head in disbelief anymore...

And you know all those at the top got their bonuses.. guess that is all that really counts

This is a GOOD thing.

CSU's are perennially over-enrolled and accept low-quality students because they have to. This has led to some pretty big problems in the areas around the schools and the sinking reputation of the CSU system.

Hopefully this will weed out some of these loser, frat boy partiers who don't even attend classes to actual students can learn something.

Unfortunately, the cuts in student loan availability will probably keep the partiers who can afford school in the CSU and move the working poor out.

CSU officials said Thursday that campuses on the quarter system have stopped accepting applications for the 2010 winter term.
CSU, which has about 450,000 students, typically admits more than 35,000 freshmen, undergraduate transfer and graduate students during the spring term.
The decision to close spring admissions is part of its overall strategy to reduce student enrollment to cope with a 20 percent reduction in state funding.
The CSU Board of Trustees is expected to vote on an overall plan to address a nearly $600 million budget shortfall when it meets in two weeks.

Maybe this has a silver lining by putting pressure on students, parents and high school instructors to ensure that students are better prepared if they intend to go to a 4 year college or university right away.

60% of the freshman students admitted to the CSU system require remedial courses in math or english or both.

In other words they met admission standards BUT did not graduate from high school with the knowledge and skills to do college level work. That means the state universities pay instructors to teach what is basically high school level work instead of paying to teach college level courses.

At the University of California system it is roughly 30% needing remedial courses even given the higher UC admission standard.

Before someone says that its only California, a recent study found that nationwide 29% of freshmen at public 4 year colleges and universities needed remedial courses.

And yes the students themselves have some responsiblity in this. A nationwide survey two years ago of college freshmen found that "when looking at the academic habits of these students in their last year of high school, more reported having been late to class frequently - 60.6 percent in 2006, compared with 48.2 percent in 1966 - and only 32.8 percent reported spending six or more hours a week on homework, compared with 47 percent in 1987. "

I really hate it when they call me asking for donations; in the meantime, all my computer science "fellow classmen" have returned to their home countries and probably never get hit up for donations. It's only we American suckers who get asked to pay, pay, and pay. And BTW, how many tax dollars from China, India, etc. are contributed to OUR California college systems? My guess is ZERO.

What this really adds up to is a drop in admissions to CSUs. I don't see the good in it, especially since we are going through an economic depression and now more than ever we need an educated, skilled middle class. I don't understand why people are so gung-ho about cutting funding to universities and schools. What do they think will come of all the people who are now under educated? If more of our population is cut out of four year colleges, what jobs will be available to them? How can they possibly compete on the global market?

You also mentioned putting pressure on high school instructors. Teachers already have too much pressure. We have to worry about state tests, district tests, funding, violence, drugs. You name it. We worry about it. Putting more pressure on teachers is like trying to pour a gallon of water into a glass that is already over flowing.

I agree that our children are not getting the proper education. I've talked to seniors in high school who are about to graduate and enter "the real world" and 99% of them have no clue what a recession is, or that we are in one. Most of them have very little critical thinking/reasoning skills, and would much rather talk about American Idol than the state of America that we live in.

The only way out of this mess, is for everyone to pull together. Not say - they should do this, or they should do that. Everyone needs to help one another. So instead of being critical, help out.

We actually owe China about 40% of our debt. So yes, I would say they pay a very large portion of our state schools.

And why would we be suckers for wanting to educate our own citizens. Do you hear what you are saying?
