The entire city of Fairfield is a suburban dump.

Both Fairfield and Vacaville are pitiful. I wouldn't live in either city. They're rundown and aren't pretty to look at.

Unfortunately, given that Travis is in Fairfield, your options to commute 30 minutes either way are slim to nill. Davis -> Fairfield is a heck of a commute, especially with traffic coming from Sacramento the Bay Area M-F and anywhere else going the other direction isn't a viable place for singles. Vallejo is the next big city but that place is worse than Fairfield and Vacaville so I think your options are pretty limited. If you don't mind bumper-to-bumper traffic and long commute times and are flexible with that 30 minute cap you're putting on yourself, there are some nicer cities once you get in to the Bay Area that you'd probably enjoy given their proximity to San Francisco.

But what you describe as to what you're looking for ideally is just non-existant in that area. I'm sure some others will agree.. your options are severly limited. If it were me in your shoes, I'd definitely come out here BEFORE moving to get an idea since only you yourself can decide what will be best for you, but at that point you'll see what we're talking about. I know if that was me I'd probably live in the Bay Area somwhere and deal with the crappy commute before I ever got a place in Fairfield or Vacaville.

Thanks everyone but I just received notice this morning that my orders have been changed AGAIN. Now I'll be in Virginia, so I guess I will transfer my question over to the VA forum. Based on what you guys are saying about the area and the fact that I have no family or friends whatsoever on the west coast, I am very relieved.
