New cars dont have to get smog checked for the first 4 yrs. Otherwise its every two yrs we need a smog test & its not easy.My smog is now due on my 90 Tbird but im blowing it off & selling or junking the car. The dmv wants my arm, leg & right fat toe. Screw them! My 85 olds smog is due 11/11 & my tags will be around 73 dollars. Just a few yrs back it was 55.00 & before that it was 45 & before that it was 39.00. DAMN....i HATE the dmv, ftb & coward legislature.

Your fees are set by the California State Legislature and have nothing to do with the DMV. Hoping that a DMV employee goes to hell because the assemblyman that you voted for raised your fees is odd at best.

This year's budget currently on the table includes an $18 yearly fee for state parks, whether you use them or not, increases in county fees and an intent, that may or may not pass to double the fees back to what they were when everyone got so upset that they recalled Grey Davis.

This is on top of last years budget which raised the fee going to the CHP from $9 to $30 and raised the VLF from .65% of the value of your car to 1.15%. It also greatly increased the penalties that the Legislature ordered the DMV to collect.

Has anyone not noticed that the governor's main campaign slogan was that he was going to "cut the car tax" and by the time he leaves office, it will be nearly 3 times what it was before he cut it.

Sign your petition. Just don't expect it to do any good. Raising DMV fees are considered "freebies" by the Legislature--they aren't considered to be taxes so no matter how high they are raised, your Legislator can still say he didn't raise your taxes, and they're considered a "rich tax" that everyone can afford, cause the poor people are taking the bus.

This legislature is the worse most have ever seen. I know they are the root of all evil & dmv fees will continue to go up. Hopefully the voters dont vote for the yearly park fee but i bet the county fee goes up again. Its not cheap owning a car in ca but people continue to buy new or late model cars. I have talked to the dmv in sacramento a total of 4 times in the past 1.6 yrs. Two times they were quite rude.

Life is too short to get worked up over a $73 registration fee.

Ah, yes - Texas, that epicenter of fiscal responsibility... except for the $18,000,000,000 Texas budget deficit:

It can be used to gauge interest in a topic. If enough people are interested enough to sign the online petition, it might be worth trying for a ballot measure.

Considering that this thread is over a year old and we still have car registration fees, the answer is plain.

I'm sure you could find millions of people who will sign an online petition declaring that ALL taxes should be banned. Just because it's popular doesn't mean it isn't a stupid idea.
