Sound stages can be built anywhere and thanks to a roof and climate control, the outside doesn't matter.

The program offers a 20%-25% incentive, not nearly as generous as the credits offered by other states (Michigan offers a 42% incentive), and comes with a boatload of restrictions. They don't even take effect until 2011.
California would seem to have a natural advantage in that so much of the industry infrastructure is already here, but that hasn't stopped the state from bleeding production like crazy. It's no different a situation from that of any other industry that's gotten out of CA. The state isn't going to reverse this trend by putting up a tax-incentive program to compete with those of a dozen other states; its only hope is to completely rehabilitate its business climate and make itself a place worth investing in again. And pro-business politics are nowhere in sight, either for L.A. or for the state at large.

We are using energy consumption taxes, regs and controls to starve capitalism in California. I realize this is the collective we, I personally abhor this manifestation of "Green-Red" Gaia Religion / Marxism.

Is there a link somewhere? I've never seen Deal or No Deal so the news of it moving doesn't exactly leave me swooning. I know lots of shows are filmed outside of CA and so I'm not sure what the big deal is?

Cece, I don't watch Deal or No Deal either but it means business and business CA is known for (TV/Films) is going elsewhere. For the future of CA it is a bigger deal than many realize.

Tell me that the liberal Hollywood elites are not going to India. They would not do that right? I mean talk about outsourcing. What hypocrites.

The Midwest pretty much sucks, but things are cheap and production can be done at a fraction of what it can in CA.

There was a movie filmed in Guthrie recently, just outside of Oklahoma City. It was set in Guthrie. Instead of recreating a historic town, they just took the cars off the road and shot the movie. When California gave the industry a deal it was cheaper to build a set and pretend. Now its cheaper to transport the production to the place. Location filming has always been the last resort unless its a blockbuster, but now that seems to have changed.
The bonus for the movie viewing public is they get to see a movie set in Oklahoma and see what Oklahoma really looks like. Ditto to all the other places where things are being shot in the same places they are supposed to be. With the series Jericho, the joke was the rolling hills on Stanley's farm. I've been to north west Kansas and it does have little rolling hills, but Stanley's were on steriods for Kansas. (and people do notice these things).
When the film industry diversifies, and they don't have to ship the whole production from LA to whereever but have other places to ship from, LA doesn't have a chance of bringing them back.

Movies, schmoovies. We'll backfill with all those new green jobs, like, for example, sorting and shredding cardboard. Oh, I know someone falls into the machinery once in a while, trade offs, ya know. /sarc
