Basically the 2 names follow the 2 large rivers that meet at the Delta.

Not sure what parts you saw of Fresno, but if you only drove through on 99 or through parts of downtown, no it doesn't look "nice" because those are industrial and poorer areas. But if you get off the freeways and explore the northern or eastern residential areas, walk/bike the San Joaquin River Parkway, visit the Tower District or Mural District, explore Old Town Clovis, etc. it is very different area than what some people see/hear.

The San Joaquin & Pajaro Rivers, used to fish them lustrums ago. We had lots of Fun fishin' & campin' along the CA Aquaduct & Delta/Mendota canals. this one from Tracy to Firebaugh.........caught & mostly released lots of Striped Bass & Channel catfish.

The central valley sucks. Yes, Sacramento and the Bay area are much better choices. When you see everyone talking about illegal aliens, meth labs, and poor air quality, they ARE NOT over exaggerating! What wasn't mentioned is the lack of diveristy due to racism, well at least here in Modesto. You have Mexicans and white people, and that's about it. I would go back to Sacramento in a heartbeat if I could.

How is Sacramento not in the valley now? Is that like San Francisco being distinct from the peninsula?

We Sacramentans don't like to associate ourselves with the CV.

In general when people talk about the CV they mean Stockton, Fresno, and Bakersfield.

Of course you already knew this and you were just trying to be an ass.

I grew up in the little air force town called Atwater.. Back when the Air Force base was open, there was plenty of diversity, many more families from Asian countries as well as Black families.. Nowadays, the valley resembles that of a Third World Country.. Infested with drugs, gangs and illegal aliens..

Although it may be affordable, there isn't very much opportunity in way of jobs..

Right! Diversity is beautiful and the cv is hurting in embracing a blended culture. It's crazy, the diversity that is here is segregated, talk about non progressive! Also yes, while it may be afforable, good luck finding work!

Why do people in Sacramento think they are so much better then people in Fresno? Your city is not that special and the housing is overpriced. Sacramento IS a part of the central valley. Its flat just like Fresno. And the Sierras are just to the east. Fresno is in the San Joaquin Valley if you want get technical. Fresno is the bread basket of California, and the nation. Also, Fresno and Clovis has a great public school system. I know because, I lived it. Sac cannot say that, and I'm not talking about Roseville or Grass Valley. So give Fresno some credit.

I am from Sacto and believe me I know its in the valley. When its 100 degrees in late september you know you are in the valley. I think sacto just has a bit of trouble because we are a big metro area with about 2 million people...and yet people still call us cow town as if we are some place like tulare. I like Fresno by the way you guys got a great ball park

When traveling it's like FresnoFacts stated. All of it from Redding on down to Bakersfield seems like the central valley. I'm going to going on down there in just a few days for a little vacation. I hope the weather is warm as I'm hoping to enjoy some sunshine. You get lots of sunny days out there.

I wonder if Clearlake is considered part of the central valley or not? I was thinking about making a stop there on the way down. I'll be going down 101 then cutting over to i-5. Going back I'll be going up 1-5 all the way.
