It's not that the world revolves around it, it's that California is huge and offers pretty much all one needs outside of major travelling to see Europe, Asia, etc. All kinds of climates, all kinds of activities, etc. Why give your money to another state when you can do the same here? The only time my friends go out of state for a vacation generally is to Vegas, Havasu, Laughlin, or Utah to ski. California either borders/very close to those cities or provides lesser experiences in those areas(Utah has the best skiing in the States and Vegas is hard to duplicate).

It has been a few years since I drove to Mexico but you always had to get insurance at the border before crossing. Back then you also always wanted to take the toll roads, they were much better.
Crossing the border back into the US can take forever. If your car is packed be prepared to have it searched. Don't bring back more liquor than you are allowed because they will make you pour it out.

Never had a problem at the border in Mexico, they never really check anything.
But I like to go to Mexico, San Diego, Bodega Bay, Carmel, Monterey, Santa Barbabra, Napa, Tahoe, Washington, Maine, Illionois, DC, New York, Hawaii, Africa, and I LOVE SO. America & the Carribean, and Italia!!!

Actually, you don't HAVE to get insurance before you cross the order but many responsible adults choose to. When I was a kid my parents would always pull into some strip mall and get insurance before crossing into Mex, even if we were only going there to eat or go shopping for a few hours. It's really cheap for short trips.
The times I went there on my own I was NOT a responsible adult so I just went without insurance and never had any problems. Besides, my cars were usually not worth more than $1000 a that time so there may not have been much point to insuring them anyways. At any rate, Mexico is not nearly as legalisitc of a country as the US, and they like our tourist $$ so there are few checks and restrictions to get in. Getting back can be another story and these days you better make sure to have a passport or you may be in for a tough time. Back int he 80's and 90's all you needed was some picture ID but times have obviously changed. I have not crossed the Mex border since 9/11 so it may be totally different now anyways.

I like Santa Barbara, Big Sur, and Cambria is a perfect for a weekend get -away. I would prefer to leave the state though, if I'm going on a real Holiday. I just got back from MI, went for a visit with family. In Sept. heading to Idaho to visit friends. I would never go to Mexico, my friend has a place there, in a gated community, she went through the gate one morning and seen two dead bodies, took the police three days to pick them up, that is sick, imo, I dunno even Cuba seems safer.

$$$$
Cost me 1500 to goto France/England for a month in 2000. The Franc going away (and the Euro gaining heavily against the dollar since then) has drastically changed affordability of European vacations for one. While I love travelling the world, it's hard to justify it with the cost nowadays and the economic climate on top of it. The term "staycation" isn't being thrown around for nothing

I lived in Europe for years and I've seen the wonders of Canada. The Caribbean, Mexico....that's about it.

I haven't lived in California in awhile, but I'm quite sure where I'd spend some of my vacations:
July 4th weekend in Portland, OR for the annual Waterfront Blues Festival.
New Orleans most years. Maybe New York or Florida at least once.
If I lived in mid-to-northern Calif then I'd probably go to Palm Springs once in awhile; if I lived in southern Calif then I'd probably got to San Francisco.
