Dublin? I'm not too familiar with the East Bay since I'm usually around San Francisco/Peninsula but avoid SF's Ocean Beach if you're looking to get into the water. It's fine for a bon fire but the water is pretty cold. If you like clubs you can check out Glas Kat (18+) and of course SF has a million tourist attractions but I'm not big on all that. If the skies are clear that day go to Twin Peaks to get an amazing view of the city. If you like shopping hit up the downtown mall, it is huge and you'll find something you like.

Santa Cruz.
Capitola.
Capitola Inn is a good and relatively inexpensive place to stay and is a short walk from the center of Capitola (a fun beach town - oldest beach resort on the CA coast) and it's easy to get to Santa Cruz (and beach boardwalk) from there.
There are 4 building that comprise the Inn. Request a room in #1.
Dublin will be about an hour from Santa Cruz (without traffic) ... over HW17 > 880 > 680 > Dublin.
Traffic is very bad during work rush hour.
On the weekends, toward the end of the day when people are leaving S.C. and heading back over the hill HW17 to San Jose and also up and down HW1 through S.C. county, it can be heavy as well.
