Your housing budget will not get you into too many places. Did see a 3 bed
2 bath, new construction, in California City on craigslist for $1200.
If your wife worked in Lancaster she would have about a 35 minute trip.
If you could afford to come out for a week to survey the area you would have a better idea of the locations which would be both suitable and acceptable. You may have to spend a sizable portion of the pay increase on housing, which may or may not be satisfactory, but at least you will know what you're in for prior to submitting your notice.

Palmdale is nice, if you stay West...it has lots of shopping, and plenty to do.
You get quite a bit for the money here. Cal City is the boonies, which is good if you like that sort of thing.

It depends what time of day...regular business hours it would take her twice that!

I'm not sure about your housing costs in MS, but if you had to pay $500 a month more you would still be way ahead. More concern to me would be the weather. It will be a lot dryer but can get way over 100 degrees in summer. But without humidity, it's pretty comfortable. Have you ever seen the area?

Whatever you do, stay out of Rosamond, the town basically bordering Edwards. I just spent an entire day there on a movie shoot. Yikes.
