Trying to find some good ideas for one day trips to take the kids and family this summer instead on doing a multi day road trip down to Disneyland. Boundaries would be west to Bay area, Fresno to the South Yosemite to the East and Chico area to the North. Kids are 3,5,7. Any really fun trips you've done would be appreciated, and if there are any tips as to taking those trips. Thanks

Check out the Effiew Yeaw Nature center in Carmichael. They have a small museum and a great area to go walking about. You can see some small wild animals and the little ones like yours think it is real "hiking".My kids have always enjoyed going there.

Yeah,

A Monterey/Big Sur adventure is alway fun. We have three children about the same age. And there is plenty to do down here including:
* Aquarium
* Whale watching (boat, or shore)
* My Museum (for kids)
* Natural History Museum in PG
* PG Lighthouse
* Great hiking in places like Point Lobos, Big Sur, etc...
* Beautiful scenery

Yosemite is nice but way to crowded especially in the Valley this time of the year.

Where are you starting your one day trip from?

Derek

Great one day trips for family with young kids in Northern CA.-santa-cruz.jpgi

The Santa Cruz beach boardwalk would be fun for the kids and someone else suggested the Monterey Aquarium which i second.

Safari West in Santa Rosa is pretty cool, giraffes, rhinos and such, it's a bit pricey, but a really fun tour.

I like the Oakland zoo, more so than the SF zoo.

The Bay Discovery museum is one of my nieces favorite places to visit.

The USS Hornet in Alameda.

Alcatraz tour.

The Skunk Train.

Our favorite place to take the family is Tilden Park in Berkeley..There's a train ride, carousel, Lake Anza (swimming allowed), a petting farm, nature center, and a botanical garden. You can spend all day or just do a couple of things. I also second the recommendation for the Oakland Zoo. Much better that the San Francisco zoo. Parking is plentiful, crowds minimal, and it's really compact with a lot to see. There's also the Tech museum and Children's Discovery museums in San Jose..also really fun.
