Default CA again held hostage by Public Employee Unions

California public union OKs strike authorization | U.S. | Reuters

So the public employee unions are threatening to strike. Why oh why does the state continue to put up with this kind of extortion. Tens of thousands have lost their jobs, the state is crippled by confiscatory taxation and yet the PE unions demand more and more and more. I hope that this time people will tell the legislature and the govenor that enough is enough.

This is the problem, most unions have outlived their usefulness, they were important for a time, that time has largely passed, and now they bring down whatever industry they are in (compare US unionized auto industry to Japaneese non-union).

I wonder how many will continue to have their pockets picked by unions so they can ensure their overly generous benefits at taxpayer expense.

Hard for me to understand this as well. Why is it that people with all the benefits and more than the average producer will have ever need a union? Anyone that receives pay and incentives from taxation should not have the ability to increase their income by means of a union. People that add to the public coffers need a union of their own to say how those monies are used. Those that take from the taxation of individuals should not have a say. Maybe they pay taxas as well. I get that, but the money they make comes from those of us that produce something of value.

Considering that in the last year this union pumped $2.3 million worth of handouts (bribes) into the Legislature, that's why they and others have the clout they do. The Democrat majority we're the biggest recipients and will vote down any measure to weaken the unions; probably the RINO Governator as well if Maria has anything to say about it.

As one who is receiving those "overly generous" benefits I appreciate them, as does my wife. We also paid into them, the benefits, not the unions, for a combined 40 years.

Let 'em strike... they'll just end up hurting themselves in the end.

I'm guessing by that you mean that you believe public employees produce nothing of value. While I'll concede they don't "produce" goods, they certainly produce services. I certainly believed I was providing a necessary service as a peace officer taking dangerous felons off the street.

Prior to that I thought that serving in the armed forces was of benefit to my country and its people.

Having had a house fire four years ago I certainly appreciated the timely response of our local firefighters who are public servants.

During my last decade+ of public service a major focus of mine was keeping the worst-of-the-worst among child molesters and other sex offenders out of your neighborhoods.

By the way, public servants DO pay taxes. They also pay into their retirement funds and benefits as well as pay premiums on those benefits while they work.

But that's OK! I'll feel good about what services I provided even if you think they were useless and unproductive.

Anyone who has ever worked for a government entity understands the need for a union. The SEIU represents the lower-paid workers of the State and they have already lost 15% of their pay due to Arnold's furloughs which are making the general public unhappy, as well as the workers. I don't blame them if they strike.

I work in the public sector (although not for the state) and I am sick to death of the entitlement mentality promoted by the unions. The unions will wait until an organization is on the brink of bankruptcy before they will make reasonable concessions. Just look at what the autoworkers did.

Unions will shoot themselves in the foot and then cry and blame it on someone else. I, for one, am sick of it.

In private industry, there have been both mass layoffs and pay cuts. There have been very few layoffs in the public sector by comparison.

The idea of white collar unions is ridculous. Worthless, unproductive, unionized state workers is just ridiculous.

I dont understand why people think public employees arent useful? When we were having the boom and all the "private" employees, wallstreet bankers, and real estate agents were making millions of dollars and all the profits. Public employees didnt partake in that they were making the same salary they made before the furloughs. I know some of them probably do not deserve what they have but most of them deserve their salaries and they should not be "persecuted" just because the are "state workers". I know I had a job before and they were breaking all types of ca state laws and it didnt stop until we got union representation. Sometimes unions are needed.
