I am not even sure I could afford to live there and I also run into people everyday who moved out of California for many reasons.

Just looking for somewhere pretty with nice weather and good for kids.
I just moved to Dallas after living most of my life in LA.

You should try the South Bay of LA where I grew up. It was the best place to live! I lived in Torrance. Its laid back, friendly, family oriented, close to the beach, close to Palos Verdes Penensula, and very safe. I felt very greatful to grow up there.

Sunset Western Garden Guide Zones 17 and 24. Almost no frost and a "heat wave" is anything over 80F.

OK, how about the central coast such San Luis Obispo or Santa Maria or someplace in that area. Warm, low humidity summers (80's & 90's) and cool winters (40's to the 50's). The beach isn't too far away. Probably lower housing costs than around San Diego, LA or San Francisco.

And you're right! More native born Americans are leaving CA than coming in - high taxes, regulations, high cost of living, dysfunctual government and schools - the usual suspects.
These are in Zone 17. Good call.

Along the coast there, Zone 24. Good choice.
