So I do business with a company out in CA...and when a few deals go through, I am planning on moving out there in a year. I have lived in SD for a short time before...and am not the biggest fan of LA (I do not want to live in LA). I find that Southern is pretty congested for my tastes. I have been up to SF many times and find it a better fit in terms of living for me. I was thinking more of Sonoma area/Sacramento, or would south of San Jose be better? Well, I guess I should say what the criteria is: I would need to go to LA once or twice a month, if that. I could work out of my house most of the time. Is the commute from Norcal to LA possible by car w/o going insane? Or is it better to hop on a short flight?

I am just trying to get ideas, so I appreciate any help. Also, none of this is set in stone, just going on what I like about the regions of CA. Thanks.

Live on the Monterey Bay (either Monterey or Santa Cruz county [great biking community ... mountain biking & road biking in S.C. county] ... or somewhere on the northern part of the central coast) and take a short flight from the Monterey airport a couple times a month.
The airport in Monterey is small, easy to access and very pleasant.
So, that's my advice.
Monterey Peninsula Airport
Living in Sacramento or "south of San Jose" ... you sure about that?
I wouldn't.
Stay close to the coast imo.
Montery Bay

As long as you live close to an airport you can take the trip a few times a month. We live in the Bay Area and my H used to fly out of Oakland 2-3X a month for meetings in LA.

Yes, flight between places like San Jose and Oakland can be very cheap. Cheap as flights to Las Vegas and those are said to be subsidized. But, you will find living south of SF rather expensive. So will you anywhere on the coast. The Sacramento region probably offers you better value than either the Bay Area or SoCal. Of course, YMMV

If you are driving, it would be about 5 hours, depending on exactly where you live and where in so cal you have to go.

My other half spent over a year commuting to LA via Southwest Airlines out of Oakland on Mondays and would come back on Fridays. We live in the North Bay (Sonoma County).
Better than moving the gang down to SoCal (as far as we're concerned).
There's also the Santa Rosa Airport where Horizon Airlines runs flights to LA and other places, just a bit more expensive than SW and not as many flights...but if you're only doing it a couple of times a month it's no big deal as long as you're near SFO, OAK, STS, SJC, you should be fine.

First, it is were me, I think I would hop on a short flight especially if you are living in Sonoma and second, again my opinion, if you really do want a little less conjestion and a quieter life outside Sac or Sonoma would be a better fit. San Jose, even the southern part is pretty conjested.

5 hours maybe from San Jose (south) but not from Sacramento, the east bay (which he didn't mention) or Samona. It would be much further.
