Anchor Steam is one of my FAVORITE beers, but to call it the best is a stretch unless one considers it the best beer outta Cali. It is unique, but Lagunitas outta Petaluma has several better beers imo.
Outside Cali, there are a bunch of great craft beers that are superior (especially from Oregon and NY) to the Steam. In Missouri, which has no 'dry counties' btw, Schlafly's and O'Fallon brew some nice beer. The best I've had lately though is an IPA from Charleville, which is a small winery and brewery located between Farmington and Ste. Genevieve, but is also sold in 22 oz. at some retailers. Boulevard is also pretty darn good, and is sold nationally. We don't have much that compares to Anchor or Lagunitas though.
Sorry, but UK beers have nothing compared to the variety or quality that's available here in the US these days.
And Curmudgeon...you'll be pleased to know that Archor is available out here in Missouri, epecially near a city, but even in some small-town liquour stores also. Forget about finding it in a restaurant though, along with the beloved sourdough.

Hope your move to MO is fairly painless and a fine experience!
