Turlock is a small agricultural town in the flat San Joaquin valley. There is not much to say about the place. There are a lot of Hispanics - mainly farm laborers there. Consider Modesto a few miles to the north. A larger city with more amenities. The San Joaquin Valley gets hot during the summer, but with low humidity. In the winter, there's rain and sometimes valley tule fog. The temp rarely gets below freezing (no snow) in the winter.

Turlock actually has developed into a ethnically diverse city.

It has fairly large populations of Sikhs, Assyrians, Portuguese and other ethnic groups. Many of those groups have annual ethnic events such as the Portuguese Festa (celebration) and Parade in September.

Turlock is home to California State University, Stanislaus, a small commuter campus of only about 7,000 students but fairly well regarded. US News in the most recent rankings had CSU, Stanislaus as the 16th best public university in the west in the "masters" classification (those with few or no doctoral programs).

The university attracts amenities and events that you would not normally see in a town the size of Turlock.

For a larger choice of amenities for shopping, entertainment and dining Modesto is less than 15 miles away.

I do know they grow turkeys there! I can't get that jingle out of my head!

Turkeys from Turlock! Turkeys from Turlock! Turkeys from Turlock!
Turkeys from Turlock! Turkeys from Turlock! Turkeys from Turlock!

And, Turlock is in the central valley so it gets all of the attendant difficult weather.

Housing is cheap though! And, i bet they have gangs but don't quote me on that!

That is why CSU, Stanislaus for many of us who are older is still affectionately called "Turkey Tech".

Exactly! My brother went there and actually worked on a turkey ranch. He said
it was years before he could eat turkey again.
