As the fourth generation of those in my family to call Oakland home... I'm here to say I don't even look over my shoulder sometimes and the nearest liquor store is almost 2 miles away in in San Leonardo... by the way, I think Starbucks is over rated... there are 3 within 4 blocks of where I work.
Ultrarunner, your wasting your time.

Outsiders are convinced that they know Oakland better than we do.

LOL

Speaking of Heidegger, you'll never feel stuck in 'everydayness' in Oakland. That's for sure.

Oakland really got a bad rap for the BART riots... and no one can deny it.

Oakland Police and Oakland Residents where not involved with the shooting... it was BART police and riders come home from San Francisco New Year's Celebrations on the way home to Hayward...

The incident between BART police and riders just happen to occur geographically at the Fruitvale BART platform... totally tragic and the residents of Oakland got the rap...

I've seen that restored Green Falcon driving around... the young man that owns it did a great job... most kids would have their parents buy them a new Honda or Toyota and not fix-up something old.

Since when is waiting for the bus a crime?

The FBI and ICE conduct immigration sweeps all the time...

Montclair has posted plenty of Pictures showing other parts of Oakland... Oakland is more than pictures of East 14th Ave and Foothill Blvd...

Majin... don't kid yourself... some areas around Sacramento wouldn't be my ideal either...

I actually like the reputation Oakland had it keeps the Yuppies and suburban fear mongers away, temporarily. They are slowly starting to creep in now though, moving back to uptown and parts of west Oakland. But Yes Stay away, Oakland is worse than Kabul Afghanistan you'll die just stepping foot here.

That's because Oakland People are from Oakland and Live in Oakland and don't need the Media fear to dictate our views on a city. Maybe we are sick of people who never lived here or been here trashing a city they get their ideas about from TV.
